Jimi Hendrix Historical Marker-Tampa, FL

Hi Everyone!

My name is Chase and I have been playing guitar since I was about 16.  Jimi Hendrix has been the main inspiration musically in my life and is the reason I started playing.   In 2016, I founded the University of Tampa Guitar Club.  His impact on not only me, but members of the Club and other musicians in the Tampa Bay Area is why I wanted to find a way to commemorate his life/appearances when he came to Tampa in 1968.

Jimi Hendrix is one of the most influential musicians and guitarists of the 20th century. His legacy, dedication, and passion for music transcends all boundaries and brings people from all walks of life together. He played two nights here in Tampa, August 18th and November 23rd 1968 at what was once Curtis Hixon Hall, which is now the beautiful Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park. It is important to note that out of the 216 concerts Hendrix played from 1967-1970 with the Jimi Hendrix Experience, 2 of them were in Tampa. The Jimi Hendrix Experience had been on the road touring for at least 2 years by the time they came to the city for their “Presentation of Fire”. Both concerts were near sellouts with over 7,000 fans attending each night. His two performances here were considered “tame” by fans and critics but his life has had a lasting impact on the musicians of Tampa Bay and is a part of the rich history of downtown Tampa.

On March 18th, I spoke to the Hillsborough County Historical Advisory Council concerning the placement of a marker commemorating Jimi Hendrix's performances in Tampa.  I gave about a ten minute speech with 8 minutes of questions and answers.  They unanimously approved!  They said the process, once the money is raised for the marker, takes about 6 months for the sign to be made and finalizations to happen.  I want to raise the money as soon as possible so that we can have the sign made and unveiled on November, 27 2019 (Hendrix's Birthday!!!).  The cost for a two-sided historical marker in Curtis Hixon Park would be $2,550 plus the approximate cost of a photo on the marker is $250, which brings the total before fees to $2,800.  Knowing there are transaction fees of 3% and a $0.30 cent fee for every donation on GoFundMe, I have made the total $3,000.  I have donated $76 myself because this is how old Hendrix would be!   I want to be as transparent and informative as possible so if you have any questions or want me to send you more info on the Historical Advisory Council, the paperwork I filled out, my speech to the Council, or just to talk please let me know!  Together with your help we can fund a historical landmark commemorating Jimi Hendrix's life and appearances right here in Tampa!

Sincerely,
Chase Corley
