We are here asking you to help Jillie PAY IT FORWARD, to the children who are right now fighting for their lives with severe illnesses at Doernbechers Childrens Hospital in Portland, OR. Our goal is to provide an awareness within the staff by supplying them with donations of the same whole food nutritional chews that Jillie used as a patient and continues to take now.
Our Jillie has just hit the 5 month mark of being CANCER FREE! Her journey began October 2012 when at age 2 1/2 she was diagnosed with Acute Myloid Leukemia, an aggresive and rarer form of childhood blood cancer. Doctors and staff were amazed at how well JIllie handled her treatment plan. She was kept as an inpatient through most of her treaments, as they had to keep her on fluids to help keep the chemotherapy from destroying her healthy organs. For four months Jillie never missed a beat, receiving week long treatments like a Superhero! Her side effects of treatment were very minimal, part of which we attribute to her healthy appetitie and whole food supplements of fruits and vegtables, which she ate by the handfuls. Jillie had lost 10 pounds prior to diagnosis. She only lost 1 additional pound after starting treatment. We feel there could be a stronger hand in healthy nutrition during hospital stays. Empty calorie foods, candy, cookies, chips, and ice cream were all way to easily accessed. We worked diligently keeping them all away, and turning her thoughts towards a more nutritious substance. She continues with her healthy diet of fresh fruits and vegetables, limited sugar, as the fight will continue for the rest of her life for the magnitude of drugs she was given also cause cancer.
Jillie would like you to join her now and donate the smallest amount for us to purchase more fruit and vegetable chews to take up to the Candlelighters who are at the hospital 3 days per week handing out snacks from a traveling snack cart. They are looking forward to the new product! Chews will also be available during Halloween for trick-or-treating surprises. We have voiced our concerns to the staff, and volunteers have started to make an effort in getting some healthy snacks available to those in need.
