Jesus's Fight against Cancer

Donation protected
Jesus is a 24 year old young man who had recently moved to Australia from Colombia to experience another culture and to study English. He had recently completed a Bachelor of Engineering in Petroleum with Honors and was looking to learn English to assist his future career prospects. It was a dream of his to travel and leave his homeland for the first time. He was following in his older brother’s, Javier, footsteps who had moved to Australia 1 year ago to also study English..

Within two months of arriving in Australia, Jesus E. Cabrales Galán was diagnosed with metastatic stomach cancer (stage 4) which has a poor prognosis. He is the only person of his age in Victoria who currently has this disease. Jesus will need to receive at least 12 cycles of chemotherapy and possibly surgery to try and control his disease.

Jesus arrived in Australia without any symptoms, however within two weeks he started vomiting, he was not able to eat any food and he lost a lot of weight. He went to three different doctors who conducted several blood tests and scans and after about a month, they discovered he learned of his advanced diagnosis.

Jesus had cancelled his Colombian health insurance when he left Colombia and his family does not have the economic resources to support him. He had purchased Australian student insurance as required by the relevant Australian authorities on arrival. His claim however was only partly covered due to the alleged pre-existence of the cancer at the time of diagnosis as it was advanced. The decision taken by the insurance company was to cover only 6 cycles of chemotherapy until the end of September at this stage, despite the medical findings that Jesus’s Oncologist & specialists had found. There is no guarantee that this will be extended. The unknown and the financial costs are causing great stress to Jesus and his family as he continues to receive cancer treatment.

He has now received 4 cycles of chemotherapy and the recent restaging scans have shown that the stomach tumor has reduced by 50%. This is a good response and his oncologist has recommended him to continue ongoing treatment in Australia.

Jesus needed to start his treatment immediately when he was diagnosed, therefore he and his brother had to initially pay for his first couple of cycles of treatment upfront. The treatment is expensive and Jesus can’t wait to finish it to stop exposing himself to greater risk of toxins. Despite living through this truly tough situation, having their family thousands of kilometers away, Jesus is armed with faith and courage to overcome this tough time in his life. An application has been made to the Australian immigration department for his mother to travel from Colombia to help support her son.

He continues to attend College to learn English when he is feeling well enough between treatments. Jesus and his family would welcome any financial support that you can offer so that he can continue to receive cancer treatment and to continue to follow his dream of studying English in Australia.
