Jesse's Surgery Survival Fund

I am Jesse Jay. I’ve been an Altadena resident for the last six-and-a-half years and own my business, Outlaw & Anchor, for four-and-a-half of those years.

On November 23rd, I was attacked. It only lasted a minute, but in that short time, my attacker was able to take a lot from me.  He tried to stop me from expressing myself freely. He took my sense of security in the neighborhood I’ve called home for so long. And he took my ability to earn a living as a stylist. I couldn’t have known that the guy who said I was “dressed like a faggot” at the bar that night could do so much damage so quickly.

Walking home around midnight with a friend, crossing the street from my house, this man from the bar attacked me from behind. Before I had a chance to react, he punched me, and I fell to the ground. He continued attacking me while my friend was trying to pull him off of me. It wasn’t until multiple people came out from the bar across the street to pull him off that the attack finally ended.

Soon after the attack, I went to urgent care at Kasier in Pasadena. I had bruises all over my body, a lacerated lip and a broken right clavicle bone. On December 8thsurgeons open up my shoulder and try to suture my clavicle back together, helping the bone to heal correctly.

Now that I am out of work (and the medical bills and living expenses have begun to grow), I am asking you to help keep him from taking anything else – especially my mental health, apartment and business.

Your money will be used to help cover my mental health counseling, medical and surgery bills. While I am out of work and unable to cut hair for the next three months, I will also need money to cover my daily living expenses. I’m so grateful for all the support I’ve received already from family and friends, and your donation will go a long way in helping me heal.

I know that I got away lucky and a lot of LGBT people aren’t as fortunate. Once fully recovered, I pledge to continue volunteering my time with LGBT non-profit organizations to try to prevent this sort of violence from happening to anyone else.  Thanks for your support, time and love.

Note: Any money I don't use after the three-month recovery period, I will donate to the Los Angeles LGBT Center.
