Jen's Breast Cancer Journey

These past few months have been a time for deep learning and introspection. After finding  a lump in my breast, discovering that it is cancer and having it surgically removed and then, ultimately, moving forward with chemotherapy treatment, my previous life has been uprooted and re-focused.


In the beginning I felt a deep sense of loss. Loss of my identity as a teacher and as a Care aid when I halted my work for ongoing cancer treatment. 

My last day at the Playschool was March 14  and even though I stop by often to visit Hayley and the children, I am no longer their teacher and I miss them very much.

I completed my last shift as a Care aid the same week. I loved assisting this fine older gentleman who required help with so many daily activities and I cried on my last day at his home.

Both positions will await my return.

Meanwhile, I have applied and received benefits from the  EI program our government offers.  I am grateful for some financial help from EI, but unfortunately it pays out less than half of my typical monthly earnings, and it is only available for 15 weeks. My last payment will be in June, and my cancer treatments will continue into the fall.

I will likely be off work until October 2018, or longer depending on my energy level.

All of my treatments, supplements, travel and so on, have cost me quite a lot of money. These additional costs pile up on top of my day-to-day cost of living.
