Jenny and the Hog Drovers to China

Jenny and the Hog Drovers are an old-time stringband made up of four students and a faculty member from Warren Wilson College, in Asheville, North Carolina. We have been invited to tour in China for three weeks in January 2017, and we are seeking financial support for the trip. Band members include Maddy Mullany (fiddle), Clarke Williams (fiddle), Phil Jamison (banjo), Hayden Holbert (guitar), and Landon George (bass). Hayden and Landon work with the pigs on the Warren Wilson College Farm, hence our name: “the Hog Drovers.”
On this cultural exchange, supported by the US Embassy in Beijing, we will be sharing American old-time music and square dancing with people in the Yunnan Province, Beijing, and Shanghai, playing tunes such as “Shove That Pig’s Foot a Little Further Into the Fire,” “Feed My Horse on Corn and Hay,” and “Five Miles of Ellum Wood.” We will also meet and collaborate with a group of Chinese musicians known as Manhu (Fierce Tigers). These traditional musicians, from the Yi ethnic group, live in the Yunnan Province in the south of China, a mountainous region not unlike Appalachia. We are excited to share the old-time music and dancing that we love with the people of China and to learn the music and traditions of our Chinese counterparts.

The total budget for the trip, for five of us, is a little over $12,000. So far, with funds saved up from previous band gigs over the years, support from the college, and help from a few other sources, we have raised almost $8000. But we still need to raise a little more than $4000 to cover our travel expenses. We’ll be traveling more than 4,000 miles within China, by plane, train, bus, and automobile, and eating a lot of take-out! We only need to raise about one dollar more per mile. Please help us reach our goal. (Please note that contributions to the band's travel fund are not tax-deductible.)
