Jennie’s recovery’s treatment

Donation protected
As many of you now know, on Sunday 29th July, at the tender age of 37, Jennie (my amazing, funny, beautiful wife) experienced a huge stroke. This was caused by a suspected ruptured artery, which formed a blood clot blocking blood and oxygen from reaching her brain. This affected the left hand side of her brain and the right hand side of her body. Jennie’s physical well being has improved incredibly quickly, but her cognitive related speech and language is more severely affected. Leaving Jennie with aphasia and dyspraxia. This means that although Jennie understands basic speech from others and you will hear her able to make the type of comments which require no thought, she is unable to hold conversations or recall basic vocabulary including names of colours, numbers, animals etc. We need to basically re-teach her to speak, read and write.

Following a stoke, the patient makes the lion share of their improvements in the first 6 months. This doesn't mean that she won't improve after 6 months, just that the improvements will slow and become less frequent as time ticks on.

For those of you that know Jennie, you may agree that she is known for her bubbly, caring, gregarious personality and so it feels even more cruel that the stroke has silenced the very aspects of her personality which define her. We know she's still in there, we can tell when we hear her laugh, see her furrowed eyebrows when a sentence comes out which she wasn't expecting or the odd snarky comment. We know that when we are with her, helping with communication daily she make significant progress. But we can't be there forever and she needs specialist help and guidance.

Speech therapy is a limited resource on the NHS and so we would like to make sure that Jennie gets the best chance of re-gaining her speech and language as humanly possible. This means privately sourcing Speech and Language Therapy (SALT), applications, software and tools to help expedite this process sooner rather than later. As a family we have already made a start by paying for this, but it is likely to build up very quickly. So, Jennie has agreed to us sharing this crowd funding page on the condition that any unspent cash goes directly to a Stroke charity.
