If you are reading this, you most likely know Jen Collins.  And if you know Jen Collins you know what a wonderful human being she is!

Back in October of 2016, Jen was diagnosed with Stage 3A breast Cancer and had a double mastectomy the following April.  Since then she has continued to stage manage, be a great mom and a general “ROCK STAR”!

Just recently the cancer has returned and has spread to several bones, lymph nodes, and liver.  She is currently in the hospital in Kansas City (where her parents and sister live) and is fighting the good fight.

Jen’s dad in now the caregiver for Jen’s mom who is not in the best of health.  The family will need financial support to get through this.  But one of Jen’s greatest concerns is her son’s Darius’ future.  Jen does not have life insurance and so we want to help ensure Darius’ future for Jen.

In honor of Jen, the money raised here will bring much needed support to Darius in the years ahead.  This fund will be managed by Rolando Linares who will work closely with Darius’ dad Tomi to ensure funds for future support as well as schooling further down the line. Tomi, Jen's husband and Darius's father will use the money to care for Darius once Jen can no longer do so and also put a part away towards a college fund for when that time in Darius's life comes.

Jen has been my best friend since we were roomates in Chicago for over 5 years. We have traveled to Peru, Panama and all over the US together and worked together on many productions at Chicago Shakespeare and The Goodman Theatre. Although she moved to Ohio and I went on the road, we haved stayed close and it's been a joy watching her become a wife and mom and step mom.

This will also give Jen the peace of mind knowing that Darius is taken care of.  Then as Jen said – Refuse to Lose; Let’s give her the power to fight the fight.

As Jen would also say, Be Kind and Love Each Other.

Much love

Jen Smith, Sharon Wilson Miller, Adam Leavitt, Joel Butler, Cameron Holsinger, Matt Colton, Rolando Linares and lots of others in spirit.

"Hello everyone,

For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Tomi. I just lost my dear wife, my partner, my baby, my rock, my rockstar … my best friend, Jennifer. I feel like I am being in a trance, a nightmare from which I so badly want to wake up. I can’t believe what just happened and I have a very difficult time accepting this messed up reality. This is by far the most difficult thing that has happened to me, but I need to stay strong and keep on taking good care of my children, while juggling with all sorts of new aspects of life. I feel extremely lonely without my dear wife and I miss her so, so, so very much. She was the kindest person that came into my life and the sacrifices she made for me and the children could not be described in words; but I do know them very well and I will carry all those, along with our beautiful memories, forever in my mind and in my heart. I wrote a poem for my dear baby which I entitled BEAUTIFUL SOUL. It expresses what my angel meant to me.

I am not a man of many words, but I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart, and you all have my deepest gratitude and respect. I always knew that Jennifer was well loved and had many friends, but I had no idea to which extent until I saw the GoFundMe account, which was started by our dear friend Rolando.

Per Jen's request, there will be no formal services. Some friends and I have been talking today about setting up a celebration of Jen's life here in Chicago. We think she would want us to drink and laugh. We also thought that we may hold off on this until spring/summer, since it seems wrong to celebrate Jen when it isn't sunny and warm. If you go by a river, think of her. The river was one of her favorite places to be:)

Tomi got a hold of me yesterday morning and let me know that Jen had died. I wanted to give the family a day to let them tell anyone they needed to, before posting it here in public. Thank you for all the kind words, messages to Jen and the contributions. I will let you know when I hear details about funeral arrangements.
