Maggie The French Bulldog

Update:  I was advised by the surgeon that Maggie has just woken from her surgery and is doing well. They anticipate a fairly quick recovery from her, but we will see. Thank you again for everyone for your support. Will post more updates when I pick her up from Guelph hospital!

Maggie is a 5yr old French Bulldog who has a personality the size of the world! I picked her up from a breeder in Barrie, Ontario, when she was 3yrs young. Unfortunately, Maggie has moved from home to home having multiple previous owners--the history of her is unknown. She has struggled with her health, but has been resilient on every level. When I first picked her up, she welcomed me, but seemed reluctant to open up to me. This all changed and a special bond was created in the next week or so.

Approximately two years ago, I came home to my best friend, Maggie, frozen still, shivering and panting excessively. I immediately recognized that something was wrong, seeing that her eyes looked full of unbearable pain and suffering. I immediately rushed her to the London Regional Veterinary

Emergency and Referral Hospital, where they completed vitals and a cat scan. I was given two options, either to euthanize Maggie or to have her undergo surgery for herniated disc in her back. Even though the quote was for $6,100, euthanizing Maggie was not an option—money cannot substitute the happiness and friendship that a dog can give—they’re our family. I then rushed her to the University of Guelph, where she was to have the surgery.

Picking her up after that surgery literally broke my heart. As I watched the surgeon, walking her into the office in a splint, guiding her limp back legs, I then anticipated a very long recovery—although hoping for a quick one. But, I’ll never forget the true determination and spirit Maggie had when she saw me. She bolted as quick as she could over to me, dragging her paralyzed back legs behind her and was quick to give me a kiss. Despite the road ahead, I knew at that very moment Maggie wasn’t giving up, nor was I. Long story short, Maggie was able to regain full function of her back legs in less than a month, with subtle delays in the movement.  She had since then returned back to her normal loving self until this Christmas Eve 2014.

My girlfriend, Emily, had noticed that Maggie was not acting herself, panting and wobbling when she walked, so she ended up taking her to the vet in Mississauga. Maggie was examined by the vet, who said that she seemed normal, and prescribed her medication and was later discharged.

When Emily brought her home on Christmas day to London, for the holidays, she looked exactly how the vets were describing her. Immediately I still knew that something wasn’t right so I took her back to the emergency hospital in London, where they told me that she would likely need surgery again.

I then made the trip to Guelph to speak with a Neurologist about Maggies problem. The neurologist informed me that she wasn’t fit for surgery at the moment, since she was still walking—even though it was not 100%. They prescribed her medicine and told me to monitor her for the next few days to see if she starts to lose absolute function in her back legs. Maggie and I bought a hotel for the night since it was 4 in the morning when we had left the hospital. The next day I stopped by the hospital for a quick recheck and they said the same thing, so I headed back to London.

The next day, on December 27th, I had stayed at my dads the night before, received a call from Emilys mom saying that her progression had gotten worse. I knew I had to go to Guelph to get her surgery, since she was dragging her back legs. I ended up missing my grandpas funeral service, since I drove back to Guelph for Maggie.

When I got there, the surgeon said that they needed to operate. I agreed. The anticipated quote for the whole surgery is $6,000-$8,000. Please see attached bill. Emily and I knew these costs would be hard to come up with, but we still wanted give Maggie another chance at life, so we signed the paper.

Maggie is expected to have her surgery tomorrow sometime. I will be posting updates and progress throughout the whole process. I know this time of the year is tough for raising funds, but we’re both seeking financial help for the medical bills. Emily and I are very fortunate to have found this site and with your help, we can give Maggie a second opportunity at life--which she deserves.

Any funds raised beyond the final price of the surgery, will be donated to the London Humane Society, so that other animals will also have another opportunity at life. Proof of donation will be posted.

Thank you for your consideration and time.
