In February, our dear friend Liza was diagnosed with Stage IV esophageal cancer. We organized this campaign to offer financial support to her and her family for the intensive treatments required to treat this disease. All donations will go towards supporting Liza, her wife Mika, and their five-year-old daughter Sachi while they face the physical and emotional challenges of this time.
Liza is a lifelong human rights activist, amazing partner, mother and friend. She has spent much of her life living in Colombia, working directly with peace-communities to protect the rights of Colombian people. In recent years, Liza has worked as a trainer and facilitator, supporting folks to understand their own participation in systems of oppression and how to build strong movements grounded in communication and connection. Most recently, Liza’s work has focused on training grassroots volunteers as they tackle climate change.
Beyond her courageous and important work, Liza is a grounded and insightful human who is a beacon of compassion for all those around her. Raised in a Buddhist community, Liza is cherished for her steadfast allyship and kind, wise counsel. She's a lover of music; a soulful singer and songwriter. Liza and Mika love their daughter Sachi fiercely. You can often find them all dancing together in their living room, blaring Latin beats and laughing. Their joy is infectious.
We are devastated that our friends are facing this diagnosis, but are hopeful that your support can ease their suffering. Liza has spent her life working for the benefit of others, and now she and her family need that support returned.
Currently treatments that are out-of-pocket and very costly include:
- A $50,000 bill for the night in the emergency room that currently is being kicked back to Liza and Mika by the insurance company (no clarity yet on whether this will be covered)
- Medical trials - newer medicines may give Liza the best chance to fight this disease
- Naturopathic Oncology
- Supplements
- Nutrition - organic foods and treatment from healers specializing in supporting bodies undergoing chemo
- Mental health support - for the whole family.
