JC needs our help now!

$15,100 of $20,000 goal

Raised by 176 people in 6 months
JC went to his appointment with The Department of Immigration and Naturalization Monday morning (August 7th) and is being detained at Krome Detention Center in Miami.

The attorney currently working on his case suggested reatining an Immigration Attorney in Miami.  I found a great attorney through referral from a friend.  I feel she is the best immigration attorney in South Florida and that JC will finally in good hands and this would be the most viable option for us resolve this situation.  The projected legal fees are $20,000 of which $5,000 is needed before the lawyer can engage services.  We all know how special JC is and everyone loves him.  I can tell you that my heart is breaking with every moment he is not here with me.  Our family, friends and pets miss him terribly and need him returned to us and not deported.  We need to retain this lawyer as soon as possible.  Each day that passes without him having representation reduces the chances of a favorable outcome.  I will be forever grateful for every penny that anyone donates to help us.

Hello everyone. It's been a long, long time since I've posted an update. Mostly because there hasn't been anything significant to post. We are waiting for Immigration to process the most recent papers filed in November. Expedited processing for detained persons is approximately 2-3 months. We should have their decision sometime in mid January to mid February. In the mean time, I continue to pray for miracles. With the holidays upon us, my emotions become magnified and I feel so powerless over this situation. My ability to do anything to make JC's time in detainment more pleasant is limited to 15 minute phone calls, occasional video calls and... cards and letters. SO..... on my way to work tonight, I was recalling the scene from the movie "Miracle on 34th Street" when the doors of the courtroom open and a parade of men carrying huge sacks of mail dump out a mountain of letters addressed to Santa Clause which inevitably leads to the court recognizing the authenticity of Kris Kringle as Santa Clause.
With that being said, I am requesting for everyone to send JC as many Christmas cards, New Years cards and letters as you can, as soon as you can. Whether or not this leads to his release home before Christmas, I have no doubt he will feel all the love we have for him, help make his holiday in detainment as special as it could be, and know that soon, everything will be okay.
The envelopes must be addressed very specifically and must contain the senders full name and return address. Please address the envelope as follows:

Juan Mejia
MNI #17017927
Monroe County Detention Center
5501 College Road
Key West FL 33040

No cash, money orders, personal checks or unauthorized packages will be accepted.

I know this is short notice and it's such a busy time but, I just thought of this tonight. Please put every effort you can to help make this potentially devastating week for JC possibly the best time since this nightmare began.
Once again, I would like to thank EVERYONE for their continued love and support throughout this ordeal and wish everyone a happy and healthy holiday season.
With love,
Vinny and JC

Todays trial sadly did not bring the result we have been hoping and praying for. JC was not released. Our attorney has convinced the judge to allow us to change our plan of action and file a different waiver based on hardship. The paperwork should be completed and filed this week. It takes approximately three weeks to receive a receipt back from the court to present to the judge. A continuance has been granted for December 7th. I do not have to be present that day. Our attorney will present the judge with the paperwork and receipt then a decision will be made as to how we will move forward from there.

The trial scheduled last Thursday did not happen for the same reason. Unfortunately, our attorney did not process the subpoena as she had intended and everyone minus one showed up again. This week, the subpoena was issued and served on Saturday. We should all be in attendance for trial this Wednesday morning at 8:00am. This should be a pivoting day in this ordeal and give a clear indication of what direction we are moving. I hope and pray JC is released this week and our lives can begin to return to normal.
I received a bill from our attorney on Friday for $5,200. The total bill now exceeds the $20,000 originally quoted but, in all honesty, no one thought this would drag on for so long and become so involved. Hurricane Irma made things much more difficult and expensive with having JC moved to Tennessee, Glades Detention Center and now Monroe County Jail. We never quite reached our GoFundMe goal and now that the bill has been raised, I am forced to ask if you have not yet donated, if you could help us with any amount we would greatly appreciate it. So many people have been so kind and generous to have donated more than once already. If you have, we thank you and ask if you would share this campaign with family and friends who might be willing to donate. We never would have gotten this far without everyones help and support. For that we will be forever grateful. I can not thank everyone enough for the unending love and support you have given us. If nothing else comes from this, we know how much we are loved and its paramount!

My apologies for not posting this update sooner. The trial began Wednesday morning at 8:00am as planned. Unfortunately, we received word Tuesday evening at 5:15pm that one of people who was to testify would not be able to make it to court Wednesday and would not be available until next Thursday the 19th. Therefore, the trial began but was unable to be completed. The judge was gracious enough to schedule the continuance for next Thursday, the 19th at 2:30pm. We are very grateful for this as it is my understanding that we could have waited months for a continuance. To ensure there are no problems next week, our attorney served a subpoena to assure all necessary persons are in attendance.
To be continued....
