Students United to ERadicate Tuberculosis in Ecuador
Solidarios y Unidos para ERradicar la Tuberculosis en Ecuador (SUERTE) : un proyecto piloto de desestigmatización y de sensibilización al tema de la tuberculosis en zona rural del Ecuador.

We are a group of Swiss medical students who are working in preventative medicine to fight Tuberculosis in Ecuador. Be part of the solution and help us educate the population about the symptoms and treatments of this dreadful disease. All the money will be used for the project, including the prints of posters and flyers, as well as transportation and meal expenses of the Ecuadorian students we are working with.

EVERY CONTRIBUTION COUNTS and is an important step in our Tuberculosis awareness campaign. Even the smallest amount can make a difference. Here are some examples of what we can do with your contribution.

20 USD will give us the opportunity to print 1000 flyers

80 USD will enable us to print 400 questionnaires and consentment forms to enable us a study about the level of knowledge about Tuberculosis in a specific region of Ecuador, Jaramijó

165 USD will cover the transportation cost between Manta and Jaramijó, Ecuador

300 USD will cover the prints of all T-shirt necessary

525 USD will cover the meal expenses

Please don’t hesitate to contact us by [email redacted] if you have any questions or doubts concerning our project and crowdfunding.

SUERTE aims to decrease the burden of Tuberculosis (TB) in the district of Jaramijó (pop. 30'732), a rural region of Ecuador in the Manabí province. Manabí province has the 3rd highest prevalence of TB. In order to decrease TB prevalence via increased detection of respiratory symptoms (cough and expectoration for more than 15 days), Ecuador’s Ministry of Public Health (Ministerio de Salud Pública - MSP) fixes the national target of respiratory symptom detection at 4% of all consultations. However, Jaramijo barely achieves a yearly detection of 0.3%. Furthermore, efforts in TB awareness in Jaramijó district are particularly sparse. Considering that Jaramijó contains a population of low socio-economic level, spreading awareness via medical students may be a cost-effective solution in increasing TB knowledge. Therefore, SUERTE’s mission will be to sensibilise Jaramijó district via the dissemination of educative information pertaining to TB, in order to increase patient knowledge and concurrently increase the yearly captation of respiratory symptoms.

This campaign is part of the 2018 Clinton Global Initiative University Commitments Challenge.
