Jenn's Road to Rio 2016

In 2006, one month after my leg gave out at work, I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. This devastating neurological disease stole my ability to walk, leaving me bed ridden and unsure of what the future may hold.

At the time, I could have never predicted all of the obstacles I would have had to overcome to get to where I am today. Just ten years after my diagnosis, my dream of becoming a Paralympian and competing in Rio is more alive than ever.

My MS Journey
During the early stages of my disease, my body may have been weakening, but my mind and determination to walk again stayed strong. One step at a time, I found my footing and kept my grandmother, who also had MS, in mind. "This disease does not define you and it is not larger than you. You’re going to be fine,” my grandmother would insist.

This sound advice is what drove me to walk unassisted within 6 months of my diagnosis. Fast-forward to the 2012 London Paralympic Games, I found myself looking for ways to increase my activity and it was at this time that the inception of a new dream developed. It became very clear that I was going to inspire others in the same way that these incredible athletes inspired me. Becoming a Paralympic hopeful became an important piece of my new normal.

The Road To Rio
In November 2014 I was selected to be supported by Athletics Canada as a full Senior athlete. I have taken first place in nearly every event I have competed in and set a Canadian record in shot put in 2013. I have taken first place in nearly every event I have competed in and set a Canadian record in shot put in 2013.

After returning from the 2015 Parapan Am Games in Toronto last August with a silver discus medal in one hand and a gold shot put medal in the other, I left for the 2015 IPC Athletics World Championships in Doha to fight for a world title.

On October 26, my time to compete had come and after a difficult battle against the world’s best, I won the fourth place title in Women’s Discus F38. On November 1, I returned home to Calgary with great pride.

I am really proud of my performance in Doha. Continuing to fight for every throw makes a difference. I believe whether you have a disability or not that giving it everything you have at every opportunity is important.  I am very excited to be looking ahead towards the 2016 year and the Rio Paralympics.

Earning a 4th place finish at Worlds, and having met the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) A Standard puts me in a good position to be selected for the 2016 Canadian Paralympic team.

My plan is to continue to train, develop and wait for the Canadian Paralympic team selection process will begin by July or August 2016.

Without the support of my friends, family, donors and sponsors, I would not have made it this far. Thank you for considering my campaign towards Rio. You all play an important role in my story.
