Jazz in the Alley®  is many things.  It began as an informal gathering of jazz fans in the 1950s on the South Side of Chicago.  A man by the name of Arthur "Pops" Simpson, a retired auto mechanic converted his 3-car garage into a gathering spot.  Every Sunday his friends would bring their DJ equipment and they would battle to see who could play the best set. Rules were established. The crowd grew from dozens, to hundreds, to thousands. Eventually live musicians would sit in.  In 1979, over 20 years after Pops started his set, the original Alley was shut down by the City of Chicago.

That same year, Oshunyomi Mugwana, a local filmmaker and big fan of Jazz in the Alley®, joined with family and friends to keep the Alley going. Oshun launched an annual celebration of Jazz in the Alley beginning in 1979 that continued until her death from pancreatic cancer in 2006. Fortunately, OM Productions International, the organization that Oshun established to produce the Alley was able to continue and expand her work.

Today, Jazz in the Alley® offers a variety of cultural enrichment programs that:

·         Promote the history and heritage of the Bronzeville community where Jazz in the Alley was born.

·         Connect the history and heritage of Jazz to the broader history and heritage of the black community in Chicago

·         Work with local educational and cultural institutions to accomplish these goals

The funds raised here will help us continue this work, by allowing us to offer free workshops and educational materials to local schools and non-profits as well as erect a permanent memorial to Pops Simpson, Oshunyomi Mugwana and Jazz in the Alley®
