Javonh Garbutt is an eternally happy and energetic 8 year old. He and his twin sister Jazzlyne are the youngest of 6 children in their close-knit family. When Javohn started feeling sick with a headache and low energy his parents, Thomas and Doret, drove him from their home in Southern Belize to the hospital in Belize City. On June 25, Javohn was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Thomas and Doret were shocked, but with the help of family friends they are doing everything possible to get Javohn the medical treatment he needs. They traveled to Denver, CO, where the Children's Hospital Colorado has agreed to treat Javohn at a reduced cost. Even so, the medical bill for his initial surgery is estimated to be over $150k, and the Garbutts do not have medical insurance to cover this cost. The hospital is requiring $153,385 payment upfront, and Javohn has an appointment to see the Dr on Monday July 8, so we're trying to raise $153k as quickly as possible.

For the remaining $27k we are targeting September 1, to cover other related expenses. Thomas (aka "Scully") is a fishing guide and Doret is an elementary school teacher. They are both taking time off of work to care for Javohn and the rest of their family. This time-off and their travel expenses will add to the financial impact of Javohn's treatment.

The Garbutts are an extraordinary family, with an uncommon caring spirit. They contribute so much to their community and make visitors feel like they are part of the family. I hope we can rally around them now, in their moment of need.

Please keep Javohn and the Garbutt’s in your thoughts and prayers as they go through this and thank you in advance for any other support you can offer.

Today, we learned that Javohn’s tumor was a rare form of cancer. This was difficult news for everyone to process, but once again Javohn and the Garbutts showed their strength. And there is some good news. The doctors are confident they were able to remove the entire tumor, and Javohn is recovering very well from his surgery.
For now, Javohn and his parents will fly home. They will closely track Javohn’s condition with regular MRI visits to the hospital in Belize, with consultation from the doctors at the Children’s hospital in Denver. If there is a recurrence of the tumor, the Garbutts may return to Denver for treatment, including chemo and radiation if necessary.
Please continue to support Javohn as he moves into this next phase of his journey. We are right there with him, and will do whatever we can to see him happy and healthy again. Thanks to all of you for your help, thoughts and prayers so far. It has been a tremendous collective effort, and an inspiring outpouring of support.

Javohn is out of the hospital, and very happy about it. He celebrated with a burger, some ice cream and a big smile.
We are still waiting for biopsy results, and we’re praying for good news. But in the meantime, I’m happy to report that Javohn is recovering well from his surgery. For now the Garbutts are back at Todd’s house, happy to be out of the hospital, and very grateful for the tremendous support they have received from all of you. Remember we’re only $4,472 away from triggering the $15k matching donation offered by Scully’s friend from Dallas. So please spread the word, and help us hit that fundraising milestone.
Thanks again to each of you and stay tuned for an update as soon as lab results come in.

Yesterday we heard from a long-time friend of the Garbutts from Dallas, Tx. He and his family have been fishing with Scully since 2002, watching all the Garbutt kids grow up. When he heard about Javohn, he immediately asked “how can I help?” and then stepped-up with a very generous offer; a $15k matching donation challenge. As I post this update, we have received $107,713 in donations to help cover the cost of Javohn’s surgery. If we can raise another $15k (getting us to $122,713), this friend of the Garbutts will match your generosity with his own $15k donation, paid directly to the hospital. That would put us very close to covering the initial hospital bill, and get us within striking distance of our $180k goal.
This is an incredibly generous offer and a big opportunity to double the impact of your donations. While this donor would like to remain anonymous, I would like to thank him for his support of Javohn and the Garbutts, as I invite all of you to meet the challenge he has posed.
So please spread the word, contribute what you can, and keep Javohn in your prayers while we await the biopsy results (hopeful for later today).
Thanks to all of you for your ongoing support.

Another big “thank you” to all who have supported the Garbutts in their moment of need. Each donation gets us closer to covering the cost of Javohn’s initial surgery and his hospital stay. Today we are nearly halfway to our goal. Of course, the surgery is complete and the hospital bill is now real. Since we don’t have enough to pay it yet, Todd Roebken has extended his generosity and signed a letter guaranteeing payment to the hospital. He will withdraw the funds we’ve raised into his account for payment to the hospital. That also means, the hospital bill is now his responsibility. Todd has demonstrated extraordinary kindness and generosity helping the Garbutts secure a visa for travel to the US, hosting them at his home and making this financial commitment. Let’s maintain the momentum behind this gofundme campaign and show him the support he deserves for everything he’s done to help the Garbutt family.
In the meantime, Javohn is doing his part. He’s up and walking around, getting stronger very day. All of your encouragement and prayers have certainly helped him as he recovers from surgery. And of course we’re all hoping for good news when the biopsy results come back. We’re asking again for all of you to keep Javohn in your thoughts and prayers.
