Ana Margarita Calles is my mom, she is 54 years old. Two months ago (february) she was operated and diagnosed with Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors (GIST). ¿How did we find out about it? Well, I’ll tell you what we have gone through so far.
At the end of January 2017, it all began with a stomach pain; my mom thought that it could be something from the colon, so we went to visit a gastroenterologist, who did her an ultrasonography and a colonoscopy. The colonoscopy had an excellent result but the ultrasonography was not that good. We found out that my mom had a mass called appendicular plastron. After the doctor’s explanation we thought that this mass could probably be derived from a mild appendicitis that was not treated. The doctor gave us the prescription with antibiotics regimen and recommended us to perform a pelvic abdominal CT scan on my mom.
One month later my mother felt a little pain in the same zone (right lower quadrant), so in this time I didn’t hesitate and called a doctor to make sure if those symptoms could be an appendicitis episode. I took her to the doctor and he made some tests. When we received the results, he told us that there were things that caught his attention in addition to the appendix. We entered my mom in a private hospital and did some medical exams, an ultrasonography and pelvic abdominal CT scan. Later, the doctor told us that my mother had a small intestine perforation and that she must go through surgery immediately
In the operating room things started to complicate, the doctor told me that the appendix had been removed without any problem but he had found out that the intestine perforation was due to a tumor, so he had to cut 5 cm of the affected intestine, sew it and extract a sample to make a biopsy and know what type of tumor we were facing. The tumor was also in the uterus and pelvis, so he could not remove it; he had to wait for the results to know the treatment needed.
Cutting the intestine and sew it again made everything more complicated because they had to give to my mom many medicines, blood donation and also had to spend 7 days in the hospital. She was 5 days with a nasogastric tube because she could not ingest food or drinks in those days. All these unexpected expenses and medical fees added up to almost $9,000. At the end of the week the doctor gave us the biopsy result, the result was not very good because the tumor was a malignant (cancer) one but we didn’t know from which organ it was originated, so we had to do another study, the immunohistochemistry. After 3 days they gave us the result, and the malignant tumor was a Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor (GIST).
The treatment for this type of disease is not with radiotherapy or chemotherapy, thank God that there are pills that threat this specific type of cancer. This treatment is too expensive; we are talking about $3,000 per month and we can’t simply afford it. But there is a program in a public hospital where we signed my mom up and thank God her application was approved and she is already taking the treatment. This represents a huge help for now and forthe future because we won’t spend on buying the pills to the treatment thanks to the hospital program.
Why is this a trouble for me? Like I mentioned before, these hospital expenses were unexpected and we were not planning for it at all. I just live alone with my mom, my dad doesn’t help us economically. I’m currently paying the mortgage of our home and this is what limits me financially because a great part of my salary goes to the loan. Like any other young person, I have my own goals. I was planning to pursue a master's degree. That, for now will have to be put on hold.
The help I’m asking for is for all the hospital expenses and medical fees I did for my mom’s operation. It would be a huge help for both my mom and I. I will be so thankful for any donation you can contribute.”

A finales de enero del 2017, todo empezó con un dolor muy agudo en el estómago, mi mamá lo relacionaba con el colón, por lo que fuimos a visitar a un gastroenterólogo, él le hizo una ultrasonografía y una colonoscopía. La colonoscopia salió excelente pero en la ultrasonografía descubrieron que tenía una masa llamada plastrón de asas de origen apendicular. Después de la explicación del doctor pensamos que esta masa probablemente se formó por una leve apendicitis que no fue tratada. Nos dieron una receta con antibióticos para que mejorara y nos hicieron la recomendación de hacerle un TAC pélvico.
Un mes después mi mamá sintió un pequeño dolor en la misma zona, esta vez no dude y llamé a un cirujano para que me sacara de la duda si podía ser un tema de apendicitis. La lleve al doctor y le hicieron unos exámenes, cuando tuvimos los resultados de los exámenes el doctor nos comentó que había cosas que le llamaban la atención aparte del tema del apéndice, por lo que ingresamos a mi mamá en un hospital privado y le hicieron una ultrasonografía y un TAC pélvico. Al obtener los resultados del TAC pélvico, el doctor nos comentó que mi mamá tenía el intestino delgado perforado, la tenía que operar inmediatamente para ver lo del apéndice y la perforación.
En el quirófano las cosas se empezaban a complicar, el doctor me llamó y me comentó que el apéndice lo había quitado sin ningún problema pero había descubierto que la perforación en el intestino se debía a una tumoración, por lo que debía cortar 5 cm del intestino infectado para poder coserlo y también necesitaba extraer una muestra para poder realizarle una biopsia y saber al tipo de tumor que nos enfrentábamos. El tumor también estaba en el útero y en la pelvis, por lo que el doctor no podía quitarlo todo, tenía que esperar los resultados para saber el tratamiento que debía darle.
Haber cortado parte del intestino y coserlo de nuevo fue lo que complicó todo, ya que tuvieron que darle muchos medicamentos, donación de sangre y además, tuvo que pasar 7 días en el hospital, de los cuales 5 días pasó con una sonda por la nariz hasta el estómago porque no podía ingerir ningún tipo de alimento ni bebida. Además de ser un problema para mi mamá, también fue una dificultad para mí por los gastos imprevistos que tuve que hacer en el hospital y los honorarios médicos que son aproximadamente de $9,000. Al final de la semana nos dieron los resultados de la biopsia, el resultado no era muy bueno ya que era un tumor maligno (cáncer) pero no sabíamos de qué tipo era, es decir, de cuál órgano se había originado, por lo que le tuvimos que hacer otro examen, la inmunohistoquímica. Luego de 3 días nos dieron el resultado, el tumor maligno era un Tumor del Estroma Gastrointestinal (GIST).
El tratamiento para este tipo de enfermedad no es con radioterapia ni quimioterapia, gracias a Dios hay unas pastillas que son específicamente para este tipo de cáncer. Este tratamiento es demasiado caro, estamos hablando de $3,000 mensuales, lo cual no podemos pagar pero existe un programa en un hospital público en el cual inscribimos a mi mamá y gracias a Dios su solicitud fue aprobada a inicios de abril y ya está tomando su tratamiento. Esto representa una enorme ayuda ahora y a futuro, ya que no gastaremos en la compra de las pastillas mientras dure el tratamiento gracias al programa del hospital.
¿Por qué para mí, esto es una dificultad? Porque todos los gastos del hospital y los honorarios médicos son totalmente imprevistos y no los tenía presupuestado. Yo vivo solamente con mi mamá, mi papá no nos ayuda económicamente. Actualmente yo estoy pagando el crédito de nuestra casa y esto es lo que me limita financieramente ya que gran parte de mi salario va para la mensualidad del préstamo. Además, como cualquier otro joven, tengo mis metas, en este caso es estudiar una maestría, lo cual de momento tendré que pausar por los gastos imprevistos que tuve que hacer.
La ayuda que solicito es con los gastos del hospital y los honorarios médicos que realice para la operación de mi mamá. Para mí, eso significa una enorme ayuda porque significa volver a estabilizarme financieramente recuperando los gastos que no tenía previstos.
