Javier Tecuatl is a typical 17 year old high school student. He is a Junior at Wheaton-Warrenville South High School and is a 2015 graduate of All Saints Catholic Academy in Naperville, Illinois. He enjoys learning, especially math class, and dreams of one day becoming a doctor. Javier is a member of his school’s football, wrestling, and track and field teams. Like many teens, he has a part time job (Dunkin Donuts) and dreams of fancy cars. He helps his dad around the house, assists with translating and communicating for his parents, looks out for his little sister, Ashlee, and cheers on the Chicago Cubs and Bears.
This changed in the winter of 2018 when Javier was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). Three of four childhood cancers are classified as ALL (American Cancer Society). It is a cancer of the bone marrow, blood, and white blood cells. Bone marrow cells cannot develop properly and begin to build up, eventually moving into the blood and possibly spreading through the body. Currently the 5-year survival rate for childhood ALL is 85% (American Cancer Society). This diagnosis was a dramatic change in the life of the Tecuatls. The family discovered his condition when he continued to come home tired and with headaches. Mom insisted they go to Central DuPage Hospital where Javier was diagnosed. He is anticipated to have three to four years of chemotherapy treatment. He has already started receiving treatments via a port. Javier continues to stay upbeat and positive when he can, maintaining his “rock of the family” outlook. Because of the treatment needed and his depleted immune system, Javier is not anticipated to return to school this year.
The Tecuatl’s are a strong family, but they know they need help, prayers, and monetary assistance. Mom’s first and foremost concern is that you pray and continue to think about Javier. His sixth grade sister Ashlee asks that you do not forget about him. His parents say “To see your son sick and not able to do anything makes us sad and we feel hopeless. We don’t have a lot of money, but we have friends and our ASCA family. We know this journey is going to be difficult for Javier and us. But, with hope and prayers we will overcome this!” There are also all of the medical expenses associated with Javier’s continued care. While it is still early in his journey, there are already concerns about medicine, doctor’s visits, diet, schooling (online courses and at home tutor), and continued familial bills. Javier’s parents ask for your encouragement, friends to call for support, prayers, and any other help that it is within your means to give.

Tres de cada cuatro cánceres infantiles son clasificados como ALL (Sociedad Americana de cáncer). Es un cáncer de la medula ósea, sangre y células blancas. Las células de la medula ósea no pueden desarrollarse adecuadamente y empezar a acumularse, eventualmente pasan a la sangre y se extienda a todo del cuerpo. Actualmente la tasa de supervivencia a 5 años en infantiles es del 85% (Sociedad Americana de cáncer). Este diagnóstico fue un cambio drástico en la vida de la familia Tecuatl. La familia descubrió su condición cuando Javier continuamente llagaba a la casa cansado y con dolor de cabeza. Su madre insistió llevarlo al hospital donde Javier fue diagnosticado. Se esperan tener tres o cuatro años de tratamiento de quimioterapia. Ya ha comenzado a recibir tratamientos a través de un puerto. Javier mantiene su ánimo y se mantiene positivo cuando puede mantener su perspectiva "roca de la familia". Debido al tratamiento necesario y su sistema de inmune agotado, no se prevé que Javier regresara a la escuela este año.
La familia Tecuatl es una familia fuerte, pero ellos saben que necesitan de oración y ayuda monetaria. La madre de Javier pide primordialmente la oración por Javier. Su hermana Ashlee en grado sexto pide que no se olviden de él. Sus padres dicen "ver nuestro hijo enfermo y no poder hacer nada nos da tristeza y desaliento”. No tenemos mucho dinero, pero tenemos nuestra familia de ASCA y amigos. Sabemos que este viaje va a ser difícil para Javier y para nosotros. Pero, con la esperanza y oración superaremos esto!" Existen todos los gastos médicos asociados con la atención continua de Javier.
