USC Foster Student Senior Project
Hi! My name is Javen Smith and I am a first generation foster student at University of Southern California Studying Popular Music.
I was born in Racine, WI and despite facing the hardships of moving from several foster homes I was able to graduate with honors and pursue my dream of attending college! I was able to go to New York University for a year, but due to financial constraints I was unable to continue. I took a year off from school, worked as a server and looked for a program where I could finish my degree without fear of having to leave because of financial aid. That’s where USC comes in!
I have a vocal performance emphasis in the Popular Music program here at USC and I absolutely love it! I have learned so much from my professors and have become so much more skilled at my craft. I can’t wait to demonstrate what I am capable of in this industry.
Unfortunately, many of the expenses that are essential to success in this field are out of my reach as a foster student. Recording, production, rehearsals, PR development etc. are all very important aspects to being an artist but I have been unable to afford to execute them for this project thus far.
Growing up, I did not see many positive stories of foster youth. I was told by many people that I wouldn’t amount to anything more than a high school drop-out. I remember watching TV and thinking to myself “How many of these performers were like me?” I hope that I can be an example for other foster youth—so that they know there is no limit to what you can achieve as a foster child.
That’s where you come in! With your donation you will help create a Senior Project that will put me in a competitive position for success! This EP will serve as a “resume” that I will be able to present to industry professionals. That accompanied with a Live Performance Showcase will provide industry professionals with a clear view of my capabilities and potential as an artist. Finally the Vocal Reel will serve as a way to supplement my artist income through touring, studio, and professional gigs.
