Jarid's Medical Recovery Fund

The Backstory

On December 8th, 2017, approximately one month after his 21st birthday, Jarid suffered a Heart Attack suddenly while playing basketball on Howard University campus. But through God’s grace, Jarid is still with us today given some quick thinking from a passerby that knew CPR and being resuscitated several times by the paramedics and ER physicians.

Going through a time like this is not without its challenges. Once the heart stops pumping, all oxygen flow to the body and the brain ceases which may cause injury to the brain. The doctors were telling us that if he comes out of his coma, and if he is able to breathe on his own, we would need to prepare ourselves for some life alerting changes. They warned us that Jarid may need to learn to walk, talk, eat, speak, everything that we tend to take for granted, he would have to learn how to do all over again.

But Jarid is a fighter! Within a day of his heart attack, Jarid, still unconscious, was moving his arms and trying to take the ventilator out. The following day he opened his eyes and moved on command. The day after that, he spoke to us, and remembered who we were! For the full week Jarid was in the hospital, his family and friends watched dramatic changes in his condition hour over hour, so much so that the doctors and nurses couldn’t believe what they were seeing! And while we are so grateful and thankful to the doctors at Howard University Hospital, the Cardiologist said “We just did our job, it was Jarid who decided to live!” And that couldn’t be more true. Jarid continues to show improvement every day. …but there is still much more work to be done.

Although Jarid has made a remarkable recovery, he struggles with some cognitive and physical weakness. His family is making sure he receives the best care in Philadelphia for all his needs... but Jarid wants to go back to school in January to finish what he started. He wants to show everybody that this incident does not define him and he will come back better and stronger than before.

We Need Your Help

To help aid in his continuous recovery from the physical and cognitive impairments caused by the incident, Jarid will need to continue his comprehensive rehabilitation sessions in Washington DC. However, his medical insurance will not cover an “out-of-state expense” like this.

We are asking for a donation to help cover the costs of Jarid’s therapy sessions and additional medical expenses.  Anything helps!

Please keep Jarid and his family in your thoughts and prayers and we thank you for your support.   Anything you can give is sincerely appreciated. Please feel free to share to others!
