Jamie Hysjulien Memorial Fund for Trinidad

Jamie Hysjulien was deeply committed to creating opportunities for being of service to others and to encouraging his students at Carolina Friends School to connect ethically and with love to the wider world. One of the ways he did this was by bringing students to Trinidad to engage in meaningful service. Jamie developed an enduring connection to Trinidad, the people he met, and the service work that he and his students participated in alongside Trinidadians.
In the spring of 2007, Jamie and fellow teachers at CFS began taking students to Trinidad to work with and learn from community leaders Chad Allâin and Adrian James. For over twenty years, Chad and Adrian have been dedicated to alleviating situations of hardship experienced by the young, the elderly, the terminally ill, and vulnerable persons from the LGBTQI community. Inspired by Jamie and the CFS service work and volunteerism, Chad and Adrian are forming a center--the Manzanilla House Community of Friends in Service (MHCFS)--to continue and expand upon this work.
The current focus of MHCFS is to provide an independent multipurpose center that will promote the arts, culture, and community building activities and that will also provide simple accommodation for short term or emergency shelter. The Region of Sangre Grande, where Manzanilla is located, is regarded as one of the poorest in Trinidad. Through the work of the center, marginalized individuals will be able to regain a sense of dignity, purpose, belonging, and control in their lives. The center will also link persons to professionals and government agencies for further assistance.
This important work of the Manzanilla House Community of Friends in Service will carry on the vision and values that Jamie helped foster in the service trips he led in Trinidad.
