On May 22, 2017, long-time Otis School and community volunteer, James (J.T.) Taylor, passed away. During his years at Otis, beginning in 1995  and through 2015, J.T. served as a volunteer in the Media Center computer lab and as the school PTA President. He helped to coordinate Multicultural Week and assisted with countless school events. He was a Room Parent and an Art Docent. Many will remember him as the coordinator of kindergarten noon supervision and as a steadfast Reading Groups volunteer. In 2013 J.T. was Otis School's Salute to Education Honoree for coordinating the morning Safety Patrol. Every child who attended Otis benefited from his steadfast involvement. James was so dedicated to the school that he continued to volunteer even after his youngest child promoted to middle school.

J.T. was also a dedicated Little League coach, serving as a role model and an inspiration to many young boys across the island.

In June of 2013 James fell ill while volunteering at the school. He suffered a stroke, and despite being confined to a wheelchair, he returned the next year to continue reading with first grade students. J.T. underwent a subsequent surgery that required long-term hospitalization. We are sad to report that J.T. passed due to multiple health complications.

James Taylor's dedication and heartfelt efforts in Alameda made a huge difference in the lives of many children. He was an amazing human being who loved kids and our community. He will be greatly missed.

James' wife, Monica, daughter Lauren, and son Tyler, have had to be so strong during these past few years. Please provide them with some comfort and support during this very painful time.

We are raising money to support the Taylor family. Contributions are needed to pay outstanding medical bills. Tyler is a middle school student and will also need support for college.

James gave so much to our kids, the school, and the Alameda community.  It's time to give back. Please help if you can.
