My brother Jalen was accepted to the pre-college summer enrichment program at Tulane University!
The Tulane pre-college summer program allows young students to expand their academic horizons. The courses offered in the on-campus residential program facilitate students’ transition from high school to college by exposing them to a higher level of learning. The STEM enrichment courses in particular allow students to enhance skills in a specific STEM field in a way that isn’t possible through high school curriculum. In addition to this, allowing high school students access to campus resources and dorm life allows them to be better prepared for a safe, healthy campus experience when they attend college.
Jalen was accepted to participate in two STEM enrichment courses this summer— Introduction to Python, and Biomedical Engineering - Protecting Against Traumatic Brain Injuries. These courses would let him to explore different topics in STEM, and allow him access to invaluable resources!
However, the Tulane program is expensive, and without your help we can't afford to put my brother in the program. We’re trying to raise $3,000 to pay for his tuition, room and board, meal plan, and airfare to Louisiana so that Jalen can have access to this incredible opportunity!
When I was in high school, I didn’t do a lot of summer programs— especially not this early in my school career. However when I did participate in a summer program at U of I after my junior year, I came back with a sense of confidence and conviction that I never had before. This program would propel my brother to great heights from early on.nIf there is anything I have learned from my peers at Cornell, it is the importance of taking advantage of opportunities as early as possible.
Far too often, kids from where we are think that they have to rely on sports to get a good education— let’s break that cycle. I want to make sure that Jalen knows the secrets about what it takes to be successful— the things that my peers at Cornell knew that I never did at their age. This program at Tulane is a first step! Participating in this summer program will make him a competitive applicant for any college in the country, and set him on a path for success in his chosen field.
