My name is Jacob Shuttleworth. I am currently a candidate to earn my Eagle Scout Rank in the Boy Scouts of America. For my Eagle Scout project, I am making “Be Prepared” Diabetes Starter Kits. I am partnering with WVU Children’s Hospital who is going to give the kits to kids like me who get diagnosed with T1 diabetes.
The reason I have decided to make these kits is because on November 10, 2017, I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Before I was diagnosed, I was very sick and ended up in the PICU at Ruby Memorial Hospital. The nurses and diabetes educator at the hospital helped my parents and I learn how to manage my diabetes. Once we got home, we had to buy things for me to use at school and when we went places in case my blood sugar got too high or too low. It was really scary for my family and me, and I wanted to help other families who are going through the same thing.
The kits will include a bag to carry their insulin and glucose meter, alcohol wipes, glucose tablets, a notebook to keep track of their blood sugar and insulin shots. I will also put snacks in the kits for the kids to have in case their blood sugar gets too high or too low. The kit will also have a diabetic alert bracelet, information for the kids to share with their teachers when they go back to school, and a letter from me encouraging them that it gets easier. I have set a goal to create 150 of these kits. I anticipate the overall cost to be between $2500 - $3000 for my project.
Being diagnosed with Diabetes was really scary and hard at first. It does get easier to manage in time. This is why I want to make these kits to help make it less overwhelming for the kids and their families.
