Background:

Jafra Foundation for Relief & Youth Development - we are a collective of Palestinian and Syrian youth who were displaced by the war in Syria.  Our team comprises of twenty-four core team members of refugees who collectively design, facilitate, and operate cultural programmes, vocational training and languages classes in addition to a developmental programme for women, children and young people, a sewing circle for refugee women, mental and physical health education and an accompaniment social service etc. Our program serves approximately 700 refugees weekly. In addition, we run six food and sanitary basket campaigns annually that serve approximately 6000 people who live in dire conditions in local squats and camps. We also operate a program for children with special needs that offers support families services to thirty-four families.

Jafra Foundation grown exponentially over the last number of years and has recently acquired a four-story building in Exarchia, central Athens, which includes a children's workshop space, women's workshop space, an educational floor with five classes, a sports area, relief campaign registry offices and finally our cultural forum space form where over twenty full-time volunteers work. In addition, the organization now attracts temporary volunteers from all over the world.

What we do.

At its core, JFG is one of the few refugee-to-refugee support networks in Greece and utilises the unique experiences of the refugee journey to empower others to become economically stable and self-reliant.  In addition to offering a wide variety of classes and workshops for the most vulnerable refugees, JFG distributes food and sanitary baskets to 1,800 refugee families in numerous camps, squats and private residences around Athens.  Food baskets include the basic food requirements for many families, while sanitary baskets comprise of personal hygiene and house cleaning items.

Why do we seek your help?
Every year, Muslims throughout the world observe Ramadan, which is a special month for the Muslim people as they fast from sunrise to sunset, and is one of the pillars of Islam.  However, it is also a particularly challenging time as the dire situation that refugees face on daily basis in Athens increases drastically, which in turn, dramatically increases demands on our services, particularly for the foodstuffs required for Ramadan.  As a result, the refugee population in Athens require far more support during this holy month than at other times of the year.
As refugees need to remain sustained during daylight hours, it is necessary for them to consume high-protein foods prior to sunrise. If JFG is able to meet this increased demand, it would enable refugees to fully commit to Ramadan without the additional stress caused by being unable to meet the obligations of their faith.
We are running a relief program and we have about 1800 families signed up for this program.

How we did it for Ramadan in previous years?
Jafra Foundation carried out many campaigns for the distribution of food-stuff, health items, and items specifically to meet the needs of children, such as Pampers and milk.  It covered the needs of nearly 5,000 refugees in Athens.
Over the previous years, the Foundation distributed food basket to refugees in Greece during Ramadan.  However, we also share our Suhour (morning meal) with the refugees and the wider homeless community, whether they are Muslim or not.

How can you help?
We are planning to raise upwards of 21700 Euro to distribute 1800 baskets. Each basket costs 12.06 Euro.  So far, we have raised 3618 Euro. You can help by supporting JFG with gifts or donations for our 1,800 beneficiaries prior to Ramadan.

Dietary Needs
In addition, foodstuffs from the following list (as documented in the ‘proposed budget’ section below) would be gratefully received.

Financial donations
Should you choose not to donate individual items, JFG always welcomes financial donations from organisations who wish to support our broader objectives of working with refugees in Greece.  Any funds received will be used to support refugees during Ramadan and/or one of the many other projects that we run throughout the year. Monies will be fully accounted to ensure transparency.

What is in it for you?
Philanthropy can also increase revenue flows in your business, as those who benefit from your assistance are also more likely to frequent it in the future.  There is also a potential revenue increase from international volunteers who come from around the world to support JFG in its work for the most vulnerable refugees in Greece.  In addition, philanthropy can improve sales as it increases established customers’ interest and promotes a more favorable opinion of your business. Research has also suggested that those who engage in philanthropy to organisations such as JFG gain a variety of health benefits, such as lowered stress levels and an improved sense of well-being.  Therefore, supporting JFG at this challenging time can also be a way to increase revenue for your established business and support your own health.
