Rootstock, a community celebration of youth musicians in the Finger Lakes, will be held at the Bernie Milton Pavilion in May of 2020 with 10-15 performances throughout the day.  Rootstock is being co-produced through a collaboration between New Roots Charter School and Grassroots Festival of Music & Dance.

Ithaca’s Youth Entrepreneurship Market (YEM) will host its annual youth market at Rootstock from 1-5pm. YEM is another community program offered by New Roots that includes four workshops where students in grades 4 through 12 learn from local entrepreneurs and coaches about how to create a business and launch it into the community.

The merger of both youth-focused community events creates an opportunity for the community to come together and celebrate the creativity of our region’s youth this spring.  All youth in our region, regardless of school district of residence, are welcome and encouraged to participate! The mission of YEM is to inspire Ithaca’s future business leaders through a hands-on learning experience about entrepreneurship. Rootstock is committed to empowering the next generation of musicians in the Finger Lakes.

Rootstock is also seeking support from local organizations that share its vision of celebrating youth musicians and building a sustainable future.  Contact us if you’d like to contribute with products and services.

Now celebrating its tenth year, New Roots Charter School empowers young people as citizens and entrepreneurs to create just, democratic communities, and thriving green economies that restore the natural world that sustains us.  Programs like Rootstock and YEM support this mission, and are open to all youth in our region. Located in downtown Ithaca, New Roots is a small public high school offering a tuition-free college and life preparatory program to any student  in the wider Ithaca region who wishes to attend. Opportunities for enrollment in grades 9-12 for the 2019-2020 school year are limited -- act now to secure your spot! Visit newrootsschool.org to learn more.

The Finger Lakes GrassRoots Festival is a mission-based 501(c)3 organization that works to nurture local artists and talent while reaching around the globe to bring world music and culture to new audiences, creating environments that inspire creativity and foster community building.  For almost 30 years, the organization has served to both engage and give back to the local and regional communities in which it exists by providing financial and organizational support to impact positive change. It's all about having a grand time and generating a feeling of community, but the impact of GrassRoots expands far beyond that which occurs during the four-day festivals. Rootstock is just one example of this impact.

Rootstock and YEM are less than two weeks away and we're beyond impressed with the performance applications we've received. May 18th is shaping up to be an inspiring day when the community gathers to celebrate the creativity of our region's youth.  Allyn Rosenbaum and our farm to school team are also preparing their legendary street tacos for everyone to enjoy throughout the day.

We're looking forward to celebrating our region's youth with you. Please help us spread the word far and wide. This inaugural event has the makings of an ongoing annual community gathering. Thanks for your support!
