Marathon Challenge for the OBHMF

Donation protected
Saturday, my faith in humanity was once again put to the test. That morning I got up and went for a run.  Afterwards, all I wanted to do was to cool off, but as I sat down and scrolled through Facebook I read about a line of duty death which filled me with rage.

A Harris County deputy was executed while he was fueling up his car.  He was gunned down by a coward simply because of the uniform he wore.  My rage was fueled by the anger and the hate I see on the news, and on social media about the nation’s growing hatred and misguided distrust of law enforcement.  I couldn’t sit still, I couldn’t focus on anything other than the tragic loss of life. In the month of August, 15 officers were killed in the line of duty nationwide, 7 of those were due to gunfire.  I then decided to turn my anger into something positive, and to pull the trigger on something I’ve been contemplating.

Prior to the advent of patrol cars, police officers had to “walk a beat”. On February 27, 2016, I will “walk a beat” or should I say “run a beat” in the Beaumont Gusher Marathon. On that day, I will run the full 26.2 mile marathon IN FULL DUTY UNIFORM to raise money for the Officer Bryan Hebert Memorial Foundation. I realize not everyone will be in a position to donate.  To quote Pastor Ron Hammonds of the Golden Triangle Church on the Rock, “Within the body of the Church, there are goers, there are stayers, there are prayers, and there are payers.” I believe the same philosophy applies here.   I will be the goer, and should any of my other brothers or sisters in blue hear the call, the more the merrier. For the stayers, all I ask is that you share this message to spread the word, and if you’re able, put on a blue shirt, and come out on February 27th to cheer me on.  For the prayers, I ask that you pray for the safety of my blue brethren, and to strengthen my resolve as I train for this feat.  For the payers, I ask you give only what you feel you are called to give, and to spread the word.  My goal is to raise $20,000 for the Foundation.  I have dedicated my body and mind to this purpose, and also my wallet.  This first $100 donation will be mine.  So please renew my faith in humanity, and help me to carry on the memories and legacies of officers like Bryan Hebert, Lisa Beaulieu, Sgt. Mike Lane, and Conrad Gernale. These were the four officers killed in the line of duty at our department during my career. I will do my part to remember the fallen nationwide, and to ensure their legacies live on.

The Officer Bryan Hebert Memorial Foundation is a non-profit organization, which was created in honor of Officer Bryan Hebert who was tragically killed in the line of duty on July 8, 2011.  The Foundation raises money to provide scholarships for the cost of tuition to qualifying applicants who seek a career in law enforcement.  The Foundation also donates money to individual Boy Scouts whose Eagle Scout projects are to be dedicated to one of the seventeen Beaumont Police Officers killed in the line of duty.
