Melmark, The Home That Love Built

Melmark is known as "the Home That Love Built". It is a name, aptly given, by Mildred and Paul Krentel 50 years ago when they fulfilled their dream for a place where their daughter Melissa, and others living with special challenges, could learn, play, work and flourish under the love and care of folks who celebrate each individual in their own uniqueness. We came upon Melmark when our fifth child, Madison Rose, was born with Down Syndrome, and then later diagnosed with autism. Maddie started in the Melmark school 15 years ago at the age of 6. Melmark was truly our partner in raising Maddie, not just in her academic hours. Maddie's behaviors became more and more life-threatening and we realized she needed a higher level of care. At the age of almost 17, we placed Maddie at Melmark. There are no words to describe the process parents go through when they come to the realization that they can no longer keep their baby safe In their own home. It took us almost a full year to make the decision and then make it happen. Melmark was there, holding our hand, guiding us, emotionally and strategically. We feel such peace of mind knowing Maddie is cared for daily by people who love her, people who celebrate her, people who are part of the Maddie Village. We are beyond blessed. We are once again co-chairing the Melmark Dream Maker's Ball, a bi-annual gala fund raiser, and are asking for your help in supporting The Home That Love Built.
