HELP RAISE MONEY TO SUPPORT SARAH AND HER FAMILY!!!

Less than a month ago, in the early morning of December 8th 2014 my best friend Sarah jo was hit by a freight train in Montreal. It was an average night for Sarah, she had just finished her shift at the restaurant she worked at and was heading home. She chose to take a short cut over the train tracks that many locals in the area frequent. Suddenly her average night became a living nightmare. The train struck her at approximately 3:00am severing both of her legs off. The driver didn't realize that Sarah had been hit and continued on his route. Around 6:00am Sarah waved down the next train in an attempt to save her own life. The driver found Sarah by the train tracks barely conscious, in shock with hypothermia, severely frostbitten hands and no legs.

Sarah has been in the ICU since the accident, she has undergone many surgeries and procedures. Her hands are slowly regaining colour and the doctors are hopeful that she will be able to keep them. Her left leg is gone just below the knee and the right leg completely removed along with her hip bone.

Sarah is a loving, funny, beautiful, gregarious 22 year old girl. She has an amazing heart, soul and mind. Sarah loves walking her dog, playing with animals, dancing, people and anything active or outdoors. Sarah greatly values her independence and freedom and this accident is going to hinder her capabilities. Through science, determination and your help Sarah can still live the life she has been working towards. Bionic limbs, robotic prosthetics are inspired by natures own design and read brain signals, they are the leader in prosthetic technology. We are hopeful that Sarah will be able to recieve these prosthetics, they are however very expensive and she will require more than just the legs themselves. Sarah made a living waiting tables and wont be able to support herself or pay her bills alone for a while. Please help Sarah get the best care possible, funds will go directly to Sarah and her family to help alleviate the financial stress' that she will incur so she can focus on her recovery. EVERY DOLLAR COUNTS, no donation is too small, anything helps, thank you so much.

Thank you!!!

Update 3

So much has happened – it’s definitely time to update Sarah’s friends, admirers and generous donors.
On March 2nd Sarah left the rehab hospital to move back home to Ottawa where she can be supported by her legions of friends and her mother Shelley Stott and her sister Lena. Shelley and Lena had been commuting back and forth from Montreal so having Sarah closer to home has been a Godsend.
In these days of big bureaucracy the Stotts want to thank the Ottawa Hospital and OHIP for making this happen as seamlessly as it did. Sarah is now having rehab in Ottawa and her mother told me she is really impressed with the quality of car her “baby” is receiving.
But it remains a hard slog for Sarah and her family. The act of surviving the severing of her legs and lying in sub-zero temperatures for 4 hours was only the beginning for Sarah. She continues to receive physiotherapy, occupational therapy and counselling. Anyone looking at this joyful picture of Sarah taking her first steps can see the impact all this work is having. Sarah is coming back – more beautiful and spunky than ever!!
On the fundraising front, an event organized by Sarah’s employer The Irish Embassy Pub in Montreal was quite simply, EPIC! $70,000 was raised in one night with a number of area bars pitching in with all staff wanting to support their friend. This fund is about to cross past the $100,000 mark. A group of Sarah and Lena’s late father John’s musical friends are planning a night of great music for April 25th and donations continue to come in. The family is overwhelmed with the generosity of this community and our Montreal friends.
Many have asked how the money will be spent. OHIP of course, pays Sarah’s medical expenses. However it covers only basic prosthetics. Sarah’s dream is to have electronic limbs that will allow her much better mobility. As Sarah said in the Ottawa Citizen, the problem of her fingers is much more distressing than her legs. It appears that prosthetic hands are not covered by our health care system in Ontario. Adaptive devices are very expensive. In order to live independently will require resources. Sarah hopes to return to school and that too will be a big investment. The list is long. The initial target of the campaign does not seem far off the mark. The good news is that with the continued support of our community the goal may actually be reachable.
What can you do? Of course donating is GREAT.
But you should know that Sarah has read all your messages and wishes and has been touched, so please keep sending those encouraging words. Not every day is a great day as you can imagine and Sarah needs all of our support.
If you can post the link to your Facebook Page, Tweet the link, or email it to everyone you can think of that would be AWESOME.
We promise to update sooner next time!

Hi Everybody,

I saw Sarah this past weekend. She is in such good spirits and she looks and is acting like her beautiful self. Unfortunately Sarah's hands didn't fully recover from the frostbite, portions of all of her fingers had to be amputated. She has most of her index fingers and thumbs but all of her other fingers were removed around the first knuckle. Fortunately we were able to let Sarah and her dog visit for a few minutes this weekend and they were both so happy. In the past week Sarah has been able to eat food without an intervenes for the first time in a month so we brought her a steak dinner (her favourite) she had lots of company, was enjoying herself and said: "this was a good day". Although Sarah is such a strong person and putting on a brave face she is in a lot of pain, she has phantom pains in her feet and a lot to get use to. If all goes as planned Sarah will be well enough to be moved to Ottawa at the end of February to start her rehabilitation near her family and friends. Once Sarah is moved is when she will really begin to incur financial expenses. To mention a few costs, Sarah will need: a wheelchair, prosthetic legs and fingers. Alterations to everyday things will also be necessary. Although some costs will be covered it seems to be the bare minimum and Sarah's dreams are not minimal. Please help her reach them! Help us reach this goal for Sarah!! No donation is to small, every dollar counts. Thank you to everyone who has donated, offered services, advise, console and concern. Thank you for caring.

Have the best day everyone!!

Emily.

Hello Sarah, I have been following your news since the night of your accident and can only offer you encouragement to keep up the struggle to maintain that wonderful spirit and dignity you have – you are quite an inspiration to others who have their own battles and limitations to deal with – look at all the people you have brought together and have engaged their attention! Please keep us informed of your progress and press on with your therapy – you said yourself, there must be some purpose to be served in all this. That attitude keeps me going too!

Hello Sarah, it has been two months since I heard from your story and donated to your fund. However, there isn't one day I haven't thought of you. I wonder how you are doing, what the harder parts of your days are and what the awesome ones are. I was thrilled to see the latest picture of you standing and going forward…in all sense of the term. Your story has touched me and continuously brings me back to what is important in everyday life: the little things. I have always believed it, but your journey reinforces it every day when you cross my mind. I send you my love and strength, though I know you have a lot of that already ;) Keep doing what you are doing, as with every goal, you are getting closer and closer to it. xxxx

Just wanted to add: I did lose a very good friend to cancer, after a complicated 5-year battle, a few years ago. He was 26. Just to say, I'm not making my statements frivolously. I witnessed him transform completely, to a shadow of his former self, and yet enjoy life thoroughly with the time he had, in spite of very poor health and uncertainty, until the end.

I know someone who works at the rehab center where Sarah is. I got the impression this is a particularly difficult time. I just wanted to add my support in any small way that I can. Most of us, myself included, can't at all understand fully what Sarah is going through. I do believe, though, that no matter what you lose, it is possible to find peace inside yourself, and eventually even joy in the world. There needs to be time to grieve and let go of your previous life, because the details will be very different; but that same beautiful and bright person is still in there, and eventually, it's an act of will to move out of the darkness, it doesn't fall on you by accident. I hope and believe that Sarah will be happily surprised by what life has to offer on the other side of this horrible accident and maybe even more difficult time in recovery. I wish for Sarah to find her way out of the dark place she may be in right now. To all her friends: it will be difficult, but please do your best to persevere and be there for her in whatever way you can.

A few days ago, a customer came into the bar I work at and told me a little about the girl he knew from the Irish Embassy. He started by telling me how truly beautiful you are and how you would never stop smiling. He also told me that with the numerous Sarahs there are in the Embassy, you were always the first one who popped into his head when a Sarah was mentionned, like a little ray of sunshine. At first I was kind of wondering why he was talking about you so much and when he finally continued his tale by mentionning what you have-had been going through these past two months, I was shocked. I literally could not get you out of my mind. I could not possibly understand why or how this could or would ever happen... I dont really know what to say after all this, im not really one for comforting messages but I really do look forwards to one day -hopefully-meeting the girl I heard so much about. P.S You are such a godamn beautiful person, dont let anything change your opnion about that. P.P.S Happy Valentines day I guess? ♥♥♥

Sarah, I hope you get to read this soon, I can identify with you and part of what you are going through, as I too was run over by a train in Montreal and lost both legs, one below knee, and one above knee close to my hip! I just wanted to let you know that it never stopped me from doing what I wanted to do. I left Montreal to travel on a working vacation to Australia, I ended up meeting and marrying the girl of my dreams, and stayed in Australia to start a family, with two boys, who are now young men. I always wanted to live on a tropical Island and Australia was the biggest one I could find! You too have the right attitude and courage to make your way in life, I know it will not be easy but I believe you can do it. I wish you all the best, Life is a journey that begins with a small step,.... so don't be afraid to take those little steps, they can lead to adventures you never dreamed of. It happened to me. Please contact me if you have any concerns or questions, maybe I can share with you some of the things I experienced, Cheers and again, all the best! Ben
