JANE TAYLOR MEMORIAL HARP SCHOLARSHIP

The Washington, DC chapter of the American Harp Society (AHS) has established the Jane Taylor Memorial to help students who are members of the Washington, DC chapter of the American Harp Society as they pursue a harp major at a college or university in Maryland, Virginia, or Washington, DC. The Jane Taylor Memorial Harp Scholarship is a fitting tribute to a woman whose love of and dedication to the harp left a lasting impact on all who were blessed to know her.

JANE DOUGHTIE TAYLOR (August 4, 1943-August 11, 2016)

Jane Doughtie Taylor began the pursuit of her dream to play the harp at age 16. While in college, she studied with Ruth Moore Cobb in Memphis, played in the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, and did free lance work in the mid-south. Jane continued her career as a harpist studying under Alice Chalifoux at the Salzedo Summer Harp Colony, at the Sewanee Summer Music Festival, and in Auburn, AL with Marjorie Tyre of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. After moving to Burke, VA, with her husband, Air Force officer Reede Louis Taylor, Jr., she pursued additional study with Jeanne Chalifoux of the Peabody Institute. As her family moved during her husband’s career, she played in local community theaters, as well as with the Omaha Symphony and the San Bernadino, CA Symphony.

Jane attended Mary Baldwin College, and received a BA in English from Rhodes College, where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority. She received both her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Music from the University of Memphis.

After moving to Virginia, Jane continued to do freelance as a professional harpist. In 2000, she began providing the gift of music to patients and their families at health care facilities throughout the DC metro area. Through Bedside Harp and Robert Wood Johnson Hospital (Hamilton, NJ) she became a Hospital Certified Master of Harp Therapy.

A 50-year member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, Jane joined Chapter B in Memphis,TN in 1966. Jane was also a member of Washington Chapter of the National Society of Arts and Letters, the American Harp Society, and a 50-year member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

A lifelong Episcopalian, Jane served as church secretary for St. Barnabas Episcopal Church of Annandale, VA, and had been an active and valued member of St. Andrew and St. Margaret of Scotland Anglican Catholic church of Alexandria, VA.
