Jamie Schoel's fight against cancer

Donation protected
Here we are on June 5, 2018... It's been six months since we started this page.

Jamie has stage 4 Acute Myeloid Leukemia. He is non-responsive to the most aggressive chemo available. The cancer has migrated from his spine to the brain and now is in his bone marrow.

On Friday, we were told that he has only two to four weeks.

There is some hope. Jamie needs your help.

We were told of a drug called Venetoclax, manufactured by Abbvie. This drug has a 1 in 5 chance of putting him into remission. It is not covered by the government.

This drug costs $13,000 Canadian per month for the rest of his life.

The response to this drug is very quick. Time is of the essence - every day we wait, is one day less with Jamie.

We're pleading with you to please help us save him. Please.

IT COULD BE ANY ONE OF US…

Jamie Schoel grew up in Chomedy, Quebec with his parents and brother and sister. A nice Jewish boy who graduated from Laval Catholic, Jamie spent more than 15 years working abroad and developing high level skills and experience in the hospitality industry. His dream was to save up enough money to open his own hotel. For the last year and a half, Jamie has been home in Montreal, trying to establish his career here, while helping to support family.

An otherwise healthy and strong 41-year old, Jamie had increasing pain in his neck and back over a period of a few months. After seeing many doctors and specialists, it was discovered that Jamie had a lesion growing on his vertebrae that essentially fractured his neck, requiring him to have surgery to implant two titanium rods to stabilize the area. Despite the chance of paralysis, Jamie came through the surgery and was told he was on the mend.

But after being sent home, the agonizing pain continued and Jamie could not even stand up for more than 20 seconds. It turned out that the doctors had not removed the entire lesion and a second risky surgery was required, this time going through the front of his neck. But the second surgery also did not relieve Jamie’s suffering and after undergoing various tests and scans at Jamie's insistence (not even of his doctors!), the unthinkable and tragic truth was discovered…

Jamie has a crippling and rare form of cancer, Sarcoma, that has ravaged his muscular system, created lesions throughout his back, neck and hips and has progressed to stage 4.

Jamie is now undergoing an aggressive form of treatment, with a schedule of five days of chemotherapy followed by 16 days at home, ongoing for 9 weeks. He must spend one week in the MUHC, followed by two weeks at home for the next two months at least.

We are hopeful for his long-term prognosis, but in the meantime, Jamie faces a long and challenging road ahead and we need your help!

With Jamie busy trying to establish his career here at home and therefore with no permanent employment, Jamie also has NO HEALTH INSURANCE.

MEDICARE IS FREE, BUT EVERYTHING ELSE IS NOT…

Without being able to work at all now, Jamie also has a lot of financial pressure added to the already stressful situation of battling this aggressive form of cancer.

We are trying to help Jamie and his parents, Meryl and Steve by raising $20,000 to relieve some of this anxiety and to provide support for the additional costs associated with his healing process:

-  The cost of all the medication required is astronomical, even after the government subsidies

-  A nurse or caregiver is needed to help Jamie with the tasks of feeding and dressing himself and bathing, as he has no strength in his left hand and limited use in his right

-  Transportation costs to and from the hospital

- The need for occupational therapy is extensive, but it is not covered during the times Jamie is not physically staying in the hospital

-  Psychological counselling will provide much needed mental support and strength to Jamie during this difficult time, but it is also not covered when Jamie is out of the hospital

- Meals

All we need is for 200 people to donate $100 and we will achieve our goal, but any amount helps and is much appreciated.

Please give generously.

Help Jamie put all of his focus on healing.
