Isabella's Home

Isabella Hernández was my first friend and supporter when I moved to Ometepe in Nicaragua sixteen years ago. She fed me and welcomed me into her family when all I had was a grass-thatched bamboo hut that leaked. She was the magic behind the little neighborhood restaurant Café Isabella that fed her family and me on one side and sold tamales on the other.

Her place was very much the center of the community. Sitting in her kitchen meant sitting in the center of a rich culture but it also showed me the reality of poverty--the brutal nutritional deficiency amongst the children. With Isabella’s help we started up a successful children’s nutritional program that over the years has supported hundreds of young lives. Isabella amazed and impressed me as she reached out to others in need while struggling with the depths of her own family’s poverty. A rare soul indeed.

Shortly after I arrived Isabella was left alone and homeless by her husband. She raised her three children on her own, living by the grace of relatives and the community. I am fund-raising through December 31st to help Isabella build a simple home that is independently hers and a place for her family to gather. A small one bedroom home will cost $8,000 from foundation to roof. I am dedicated to fund-raising for and getting Isabella’s home built, and I need your help to do it. This is a unique opportunity to reach out directly and change a life during the season of giving.

100% funds raised go toward building materials and labor.

Thank you for helping.

Fantastic Friends and Supporters of Isabella's Home,

We have an update.. In true Nicaraguan fashion plans are unfolding at their own rate and direction. Which for Isabella's home translates into waiting for the time being as we explore price negotiations for the home she is currently living in and hoping to buy. Isabella has worked hard and miraculously saved $1,000 over the past years to which we are adding the $3,300 collectively raised via gofundme to offer the owners. This may take awhile to sort as the property next door is owned by the same folks and they are trying to sell both together.. as I said in Nicaraguan fashion.
The raised funds are being held in a savings account for when they can best be used to support Isabella.
She is overwhelmed by the support everyone has shown and given and sends her love and blessings to each of you.

52 people raised $3,300 in just 1 month for Isabella's home.To me that is the spirit of the season and life.

Though $3,300 will not build a home from scratch it is just what is needed. In the last week Isabella has been offered to buy the structure she has been staying in. It is a small two room structure with a lean-to attached kitchen that she is cooking and selling out of.

The structure is in need of major repair and improvements to be safe and comfortable. We are going to use the raised funds to make this a suitable home for Isabella and improve the infrastructure for her home based business.

I will be sending updates as we design and changes are made.

Thank you again for joining together to help another in need. It's a great start to the New Year.

In 2009 we raised funds to help re-build Isabella's kitchen which was also her father's home that was falling down and leaking water. The community effort re-enlivened her ability to make an income and to make a safe place for her father to live.

Now it is time to build Isabella a home for her safety and basic needs - Please share this campaign and help get this home built! This is how it happens.
