Iota Epsilon Alpha (IEA) is derived from the classical Greek, "Iasis kai Eleos pasi tois Anthropoisis”, which translates as " Healing and Compassion for all People”. IEA is a non-profit, academic and charitable international medical organization with the following mission: a) to promote the pursuit of academic excellence and integrity in medicine, b) to encourage the highest standard of leadership, compassion, character, conduct and ethos, c) to improve the over all morale among medical students and physicians worldwide, and d) to improve the public health and welfare of the underprivileged and medically indigent, internationally.

Under the direction and leadership of medical student Nicholas J. Andrews, and with the full support of Chancellor C. Modica, and Deans A. Pensick and C.V. Rao of St. George’e University School of Medicine (SGUSOM), the constitution of IEA was ratified, in February 13, 1993, by the first elected student IEA board members, viz. Nicholas J. Andrews, Derek Bigler,Venita Seru and Patrick M. Morgan. Since then, IEA has become a highly successful organization at St. George’s University (SGU), undertaking activities such as health education and fund raising that benefit the local Grenadian community. Moreover, IEA students must continue to volunteer services to the community in the USA during their clinical educational years after leaving Grenada.

Additionally, since 2006 IEA medical students have been recognized at their graduation for maintaining their academic excellence and for their services. IEA has now grown to incorporate a chapter at Northumbria University where SGU has established a medical program that allows for students to have their first year of medical education there before continuing in Grenada. IEA is the world’s first international honor medical society, and extends an invitation to all its past IEA student members who are now practicing physicians to register as alumni members, and to continue their participation in promoting the mission of IEA for global health welfare for all. As an international body, IEA promotes the establishment of chapters at other medical schools, and invites medical students and educators from other schools and universities to communicate with IEA at SGU in establishing chapters around the world.
