I Need a Walk, A 700-mile Walk.

Hopefully, it was my recent blog on my website that brought you here.  Go check it out here, first.

As a freelancer filmmaker and photographer, I make a very modest living.

It's a living, though, that I wouldn't trade for anything. For many, the dream of being your own boss remains that way.  For me, I thought to take a foolish chance at making it a reality. As expectedly difficult as it was, I've learned that there really is no other way.

Doing so, though, comes with frequent and sharp financial and emotional challenges. Even though my work has grown over the last few years, it's still a tough way to make a living.  It's always a goal of mine to make sure my clients feel immensely lucky to have found me, and as long as I keep that goal, I've no doubt that this may someday flourish.  Until then, there's lots of work to be done.

If you haven't yet read my blog I mentioned above, I'll sum it up here in a few sentences.

I'm going on a 700-mile walk in early October.

This walk is a pilgrimage in Japan that is done primarily as an inward journey.  Many people do it in other ways to quicken the experience, but I like to think that the original way is the only way to learn things about yourself that you'd otherwise never realize.

The walk will take me about 6 weeks, and require me to pack everything on my back, sleep in a tent, and eat and drink frugally.  I may want the occasional bed, and there are places and temples that will help at a small cost, but I will consider that more a luxury that's needed once or twice a week.

I still have obligations, and I don't intend to forego them, and this is where I humbly ask for your kindness.

If you're wondering why I only entered $88, it's because I simply thought that $1 for every temple I'm supposed to visit was all I should request. (Please see my Update for some details on why I raised the goal amount.) For those that know me, you know that I ask for nothing from others.  This time, though, I wanted my friends and family to find a way to go on this journey with me and experience inner peace (got that from Kung Fu Panda) through my vision and text.

Seriously though, I intend to use my skills as a filmmaker and photographer and document this inward journey.

Besides the sights and sounds, I will update my website's blog with my thoughts; probably some painful ones, too.

When donations are made at a church or temple, they are done so anonymously.  Recognition and reciprocation seems counter to the gesture of generosity, and I ask that any amount you provide here be done so anonymously, as well.  In one way or another, I will know who you are.  In the end, you'll hear and feel my gratitude in my blog, and also in my voice and demeanor when I return.  I can promise you that.

Incidentally, my surname is Hawaiian.

It means enlightenment.
