Going Indigo 4 Indigo!

A while back I needed the extra cash to make a steady income, a friend of mine told me about a company called Indigo that had some part time vacancies at weekends working alongside children with learning and behaviour difficulties. This would of been my first time working with children with disabilities... However I was welcomed in to Saturday club were a small group of volunteers and staff would dedicate their Saturday mornings to playing and interacting with the children who attended. The games and resources were limited due to the lack of funding yet all the team managed to make the children enjoy their Saturday mornings interacting with other children just like them... to the point they never wanted to go home. Saturdays are used to build the confidence of the children, open them to new friendships and boost their self esteem. I loved working here, it wasn't just rewarding but enjoyable in so many ways. I was then asked to work Sunday's, taking a young autistic boy out for a couple of hours to somewhere he enjoyed...Again I had never worked with a child on the spectrum so this was different to me, but it wasn't difficult. I loved my Sundays, smiling watching this boy run around play centres just like everyone else. I don't feel like people understand the needs of these children, or the support their family requires to ensure the children with learning and behavioural difficulties grow up along side and equal to every other child. One women who founded Indigo knows exactly how it feels to grow up having a long term mental health condition, and bring up children with disabilities. Diane Price (a red rose award finalist) self taught herself how to deal with challenging circumstances (through necessity) and then decided to dedicate her life to helping those around her in similar positions. Diane and Indigo believe that all young people with a disability have a right to be able to realise their goals and abilities. Diane supports and empowers children and families to have a voice. Now it's my turn to speak up, and make this voice louder by doing a charity sky dive to raise money for new toys, resources and trips for the children and families involved.
