Jane* is one of many students in our college who needs daily physiotherapy and time out of her wheelchair due to the extreme discomfort her physical condition causes her.

Jane was born with cerebral palsy affecting all four limbs and has used a wheelchair since birth.   She also has a condition known as Torticollis, which causes muscles in her neck to permanently contract, twisting her head up towards the ceiling.

Regular physiotherapy, and lying in specific positions helps to reduce the amount of pain Jane experiences daily - a positioning bed allows Jane to lie down in her classroom and still take part in her lessons and chat to her friends.

Our college has 70 students and more than half need some kind of physiotherapy, positioning to relieve pain and stiffness from cerebral palsy or similar conditions.   Some need physiotherapy to maintain good lung function as their posture compromises their ability to maintain a clear chest.  Others need joint mobilisation to prevent their joints from becoming fixed in one position.

At the moment, all of our students share two physiotherapy beds; only one of these can be used as a classroom positioning bed.

The Acheeva Graduate is the system that works best for students who need to be able to continue learning whilst lying down.  Each Acheeva bed costs £5600.

Once people like Jane turn 18, they lose access to the funding and specialised support that they received as school children.  As an adult, funding for specialist equipment is simply not available due to the pressure on health and social care budgets.  As a result, colleges and centres like ours end up trying to buy the specialised equipment these young people still need.  As a charity, it is a real challenge for us to be able to provide all of the equipment each of our young people need.

By donating to this fund, you will be helping us to buy another Acheeva bed so that we can give more people physiotherapy more often, and enable more people to spend more time out of their wheelchairs.
