Dear friends and family,

My heart is broken. The kids and I are extremely saddened for our loss, we're going to miss my husband Carlos terribly. We said in sickness and in health. For better, for worse. I can say we went through it all.

Carlos was first diagnosed in February 2014 with Leukemia type ALL and a rare syndrome called Hypereosinophilic or HES Syndrome for short. The doctors at Cedars Sinai Hospital said it was the rare of the rare and they had never treated it.

Carlos was medically induced in a coma for 10 days because the HES syndrome was attacking his vital organs. He was treated immediately with high dose steroids, he went through a variety of chemotherapy and a donor stem cell transplant from his brother who was a perfect 12/12 match.

We were so excited everything had turned out well, the effects of HES were reversed and he went into remission with the leukemia. Carlos felt he was getting a second chance so we celebrated, and enjoyed everyday as it came.

Unfortunately in December 2016 we received bad news that they found Leukemia cells in the lymph nodes and activity in the knees (they called it localized leukemia) they gave him 2 rounds of chemo but he didn't go into remission.

In April Carlos decided to go to Mexico and received alternative cancer treatments. We met so many people from around the world who traveled to Mexico with different types of cancerous tumors. We felt so much joy when we would hear that their tumors where shrinking and the treatments were working. We were hoping the same for Carlos although his case was different because he didn't have tumors.

We came home April 14. Very soon Carlos started to feel weak and tired which was expected as he had gone through different treatments in Mexico. On Friday April 28 he felt extremely weak he couldn't get out of bed so I took him to the ER. It was alarming to learn that his White Blood Count and eosinophils were extremely elevated. On Saturday April 29 the doctor told Carlos the Leukemia and HES Syndrome were now in the blood and was progressing rapidly. The doctor talked to him about hospice or staying at the hospital.

Carlos decided he wanted to be home where he was surrounded and loved by friends and family. Carlos told the kids he fought and gave it his all, he told them he wasn't sad but his body was tired and needed to rest. What kept Carlos strong and keeps us going is our faith in the resurrection and that soon we will reunite with him. We praise Jehovah the almighty God, nothing is impossible for him.

Carlos expressed how grateful he was to have spent 3 more years with the kids and I. We started recollecting our memories, we enjoyed many adventures including some trips to Cancun and Puerto Vallarta. All those memories will be cherished....... Carlos was a simple guy, loved football, being home relaxing, watching basketball games with his son Jonathan, traveling as a family, he loved hot dogs and pizza. He loved being part of the Grainger team where he worked. Carlos was a responsible provider who always made sure his family would be ok.

Carlos participated in different assignments that benefited the community, on 2012 he was awarded the HACR Young Hispanic Corporate Achievers award in Chicago, he worked with several Colleges to help Hispanic teens get into education, just a few of the things he did to give back.

P.S. Carlos accepted for his case to be published in the medical journals as he felt there was little information and could possibly help doctors around the world treat other patients. There's a lot more information online now then there was in 2014
