In Memory of Angela Garrido

Hello friends and family of the Garrido family,

It is with a heavy heart that I am writing this. On August 16th, 2019, Angela Garrido passed away due to complications during the recovery of Pancreatic cancer.

Angela Garrido was a loving mother, exceptional sister, caring wife, and extraordinary friend. Beyond that, she was an absolute angel who shined her kindness and optimism to anyone who was in her path. Her angelic voice and genuine presence had a sense of comfort that welcomed and encouraged all those around her. Those who knew Angela recognize the charisma, authenticity, and warmness that Angela simply embodied. I could never sum Angela up in just words because it would not do her aura justice nor capture everything that she was. She gave you a feeling of home, of light, and of happiness. She was a breath of fresh air in the reality that is life.

Originally from Colombia, Angela came to the United States and attended the University of California, Los Angeles. She served as a nurse practitioner for over twenty years in the field of oncology and cared for cancer patients. Angela did not just take this as her job, but formed meaningful relationships with each of her patients as she kept and cherished each card and gift that she received. Angela would often keep in contact with her patients to ensure their health and vitality after treatments. Angela was not just a nurse, but an angel sent from heaven who had a serious calling from God to tend to others.

Angela and Rafael Garrido had one daughter, Sara Garrido. This trio of a family loved each other very much and the bonds between them were visible. Sara would accompany Angela to her job as a nurse practitioner which would later prompt Sara into pursuing a Biology major at the University of California, Irvine. The family was heavily involved in the church and participated in many of the events that were presented. They enjoyed countless vacations together and were able to enjoy each other’s company. Angela, Rafael, and Sara were a family full of love that was molded together.

I, as Sara’s best friend, was lucky enough to witness these interactions firsthand and Angela became like a second mother to me. I attended every family function, vacation, and graduation; and vice a versa. Angela treated me as one of her own without any hesitation. It was always sincere and like she truly was my second mother. I referred to her as ‘mom’. While I was driving Angela to chemotherapy, she told me how she was so excited to watch Sara and I become young professional women. Mom, I know you’re looking down on us now like the angel that you are and always have been as we grow into our own.

The reason I am creating this GoFundMe is because the Garrido family is left with tons of medical bills, funeral costs, and schooling costs for Sara. As a nurse practitioner, Angela financially provided for the family. However, the family now has to deal with settling financial costs while also mourning the loss of Angela. Not to mention, that financial aid for Sara’s university does not take into account this year’s new annual income so she is receiving absolutely zero financial aid. The Garridos deserve none of the treatment that life is handing them right now and I am asking the community to please support them in their time of need. It would really be appreciated if you could extend a donation or a prayer to the woman that shaped the lives of so many. Thank you and God Bless.

Respectfully Yours,

Kellie McManamon

Timeline of Events:

In June of 2018, Angela was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer. A plan had been set into action to combat this disease. First, she began chemotherapy for 6 months, immunotherapy followed, and then radiation. The hope was to have the tumor shrink enough so that it was possible to make it to surgery. The surgeon was hesitant to take her to surgery because it would be a very difficult and risky surgery since the tumor was wrapped around a major artery. The surgery meant that they would have to reconstruct veins and remove 67% of her pancreas as well as her spleen. However, since Angela had an extensive background and knowledge in the field of Oncology, she could not live knowing that this tumor was able to grow back, spread, and potentially kill her. Therefore, she pushed for the surgery and it was planned for February of 2019. Thankfully, Angela was able to make it out of the surgery and the surgeon was successful in removing the tumor. However, she still had to endure the long process of recovery, as it was a very extensive surgery. The first three weeks after her surgery went smoothly in terms of recovery but then the complications began. She was admitted into the hospital every week for something new, whether it be a fever or extreme nausea which resulted in her not being able to hold down any food. During March, Angela was discharged from the hospital on Wednesday. She went to Palm Springs for a family visit. When she went to the grocery store,  she began to vomit large volumes of blood. That night she had to be intubated and airlifted to our main hospital back at Cedars Sinai in Los Angeles. On March 29th, Angela was admitted into the hospital and spent four months there. She had to be taken into emergency surgery where they removed 90% of her stomach and her entire gallbladder. After four months of admittance into the hospital, she was finally discharged at the end of July and was able to be home for a short amount of time. Unfortunately, due to losing large amounts of blood during complications, she passed away on 8/14/19 surrounded by her loved ones.
