In Honor of Kim Hall Oas

Kimberly Jane “Kim” Hall Oas had a heart bigger than the state of Texas, where she lived until she passed away following a brief illness on Friday, April 19th, 2019.

She grew up in Natchitoches and graduated from Natchitoches Central High School and Northwestern State University. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, and a Master of Science, Family Nursing Practitioner Track, at the University of Texas School of Nursing in Arlington. At the time of her death, she was enrolled in the Doctorate of Nursing Practice Program at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston and was scheduled to receive her doctorate in April 2020.

After earning her Master’s Degree, Kim had a long and distinguished career as a nurse practitioner, educator, lecturer and researcher. Kim was employed by Allergan as a Medical Science Liaison. Her field of expertise was migraines, strokes, and concussions, and throughout her career she worked with neurosurgeons and neurologists at several health care facilities including Mayo Clinic, UT Southwestern, Baylor Scott & White Healthcare and St. Joseph Healthcare System. She was a frequent guest lecturer about migraines, and she was involved in numerous research projects and had several articles and studies published. Kim advocated for patients and nurses from the bedside to the boardroom, from RNs to APRNs and beyond. As a nurse practitioner, Kim was called on several times to testify before the Texas legislature on key health issues. While living in College Station, Texas, Kim held the position of regional representative to the Texas Nurse Practitioners Association and later, President of the Brazos Valley Nurse Practitioners Association. She has been an active member of TNP and has participated on several committees with this organization. After moving to Dallas in 2016, Kim became active in the Nurse Practitioner chapter there. Kim brought a special gift to nursing and touched all those she mentored and supported in a way that will never be forgotten.

As successful and respected as she was in her professional life, she felt her greatest accomplishment was her beloved daughter, Molly, here with Kim and Kim's mother, Miss Jane Hall.

Kim will be remembered for her generous spirit, her huge heart and her ability to inspire others. In her quiet and unassuming way, she made a difference in countless lives, and she left the world a better place. The light that she spread will never be extinguished.

We at Allergan were fortunate to have known her in several ways over the past 15+ years.  She was an investigator on a migraine development program that changed the lives of many people with chronic migraine; she presented data to raise awareness of chronic migraine in support of Botox for prevention of chronic migraine,  approved as a result of those studies; she worked with Allergan to engage the NP/PA community to become more involved in the proper diagnosis and treatment of chronic migraine; and we were blessed when she chose to leave decades of clinical practice to join us an an MSL, working to educate everyone on the burden of migraine and available therapeutic options.

While at Allergan she continued to work for people with migraine, supporting advocacy organizations working toward better access to available therapies, better legislation, reduction of stigma, migraine fellowships, and NP/PA education and training.  She received many awards for her tireless efforts, most recently at the Dallas Miles for Migraine event, where she was recognized for the most volunteer hours.

Kim was also instrumental in establishing and growing The Bridge, a comprehensive educational program for NPs and PAs in primary care specific to headache medicine.

She was a valued and respected team member, mentor and friend. She was selfless, tireless, and inspired us to remain focused on improving the lives of people living with migraine and their loved ones. She worked with us for too short a time, but she will always be part of us, in everything we do.

We are raising these funds in Kim's honor with intention of providing support to the causes she was most passionate about.  Kim's daughter, Molly, will be the steward of these funds and decide how they will be dispersed. Among the recipients of these funds will be a scholarship fund established in Kim’s honor by the Texas Nurse Practitioners Foundation (TNPF).
