Improving our theraputic environment

Donation protected
My name is Kate, I work on an acute mental health ward as an occupational therapist.

My aim is to raise money to improve the environment for the service users on the ward that I work on. By creating an outdoor space that is beautiful, colourful and interesting we aim to improve the sensory, visual and therapeutic environment for patients, visitors and staff. There is little money in the budget for large, creative projects, so I am turning to crowdfunding for support.

The garden on the ward is surrounded by a huge overbearing fence which dominates the main green space that patients have access to. The fence is large for safety reasons though this adds to the sense that people are detained and cut off from the outside world. Many of the patients that have been admitted here have complained about it and asked if a mural could be painted.

The team on the ward care for people with a multitude of issues, and at any given time there can be a variety of diagnoses and disorders requiring different assessment and treatment strategies. Furthermore, there are people at varying stages of their recovery. Given the aforementioned issues, the environment is incredibly dynamic and can be unpredictable, therefore, positive spaces within this environment are invaluable.

The money raised will be spent on commissioning a local artist to create a bespoke hand painted mural on the fence.

Martin Darcy is a well-known local artist that has been painting murals for 30 years. He has completed many pieces around the southwest and has known people that have spent time on Juniper ward as an inpatient and therefore understands the impact the ward environment can have on someone’s recovery.

Martin has quoted £250 a day as well as some money for paints and supplies. He has estimated that it will take 10 days and has stated that even if it runs over he will stick to the maximum quote of £3000. He was excited to hear about my plans for this project and wasn’t put off by the fence dimensions!

And with 13 panels at 10ft by 10ft, this is no mean feat!

Various collaborative projects between staff and service users have been discussed with the multi-disciplinary team, as the project could then double up as a team building exercise as well as a therapeutic activity for service users. However, there have been numerous barriers to these ideas and it is felt by all that commissioning a mural is the best way to ensure the project is completed to provide an uplifting environment for all.
