Making a Difference in Food Safety

I want to make a difference in the way health departments around the nation monitor and regulate food handling.  If you read the growing numbers of daily nationwide posts about foodborne illnesses, the need to address this is very important. With my 40 years in food service, I have the knowledge to meet with regulators across the nation to influence a more uniform food handling system.

My focus will be in the public side of foodservice safety and my interest is to travel and meet directly with regulators and health departments across the country to standardize our policies in restaurants and catering because each state has their own methods, and some have none. 

Depending on where you live or travel, regulations vary from good to bad, to none at all. For instance in my region, Orange County NY, there is no regulation that a person working in the kitchen is required to have a food handlers permit, so most kitchens in our area have no idea how to handle food safely, or how to keep their kitchens clean and sanitized.  Right now people are eating in restaurants nationwide and being served food that could make them very sick, and they are unaware that the kitchen serving them has no regulation.

Having a more uniform system, along with accountability that all restaurants are required to have some type of food handling practice in place, is very important to our food consumption safety.  There is also no regulation on 3rd party transfer of food after it leaves the restaurant to your home, or from a meal kit company truck delivery to your doorstep. The FDA currently provides a Waiver allowing these services to have no oversight, and I believe this is a mistake. 

I am also a board member with the Dining Safety Alliance (DSA), a new organization formed in 2017, and our mission is committed to honoring food safety excellence while improving public health and safety within the hospitality industry. 

If the safety of the food you consume from restaurants and caterers, and the transportation of food from 3rd party sources to your home are important to you, this is a good cause to support.  I will work hard for you to build a better food handling safety system.

My ability to travel nationwide and meet with regulators and inspectors to discuss and petition important safety measures means everything to me, but I need your help.

I am seeking to start this project beginning in September 2018.  Funds will cover all air travel, food, lodging, ground transportation costs, meeting room charges, costs to affect change, as well as, gofundme fees, throughout the year.
