Idaho to D.C. trip for 8th Graders TVCS

Hello friends, family, and friends of family! I am currently a lead teacher for 6th,7th, and 8th graders at Teton Valley Community School in Victor, ID. It is an amazing farm school that focuses on the whole student, strong character development, place-based, and project-based education. My 8th graders and I have been introduced to an amazing opportunity to join our sister school, Journeys School in Jackson Hole, WY, to go to Washington D.C. As great as this opportunity is, we don't have the funding lined up this year to go yet. This is a pilot year for this trip that will, if all goes to plan, be a memorable experience that will build excitement and tradition for all of the future 8th graders.
These are the goals that my students set for the trip:
To have authentic learning experiences in our nation's capital.
- Visiting our public museums
- Visiting and teaching about our historical monuments
- Engaging with our Representatives on Capitol Hill
To build leadership skills
- Problem-solving and decision making
- We are responsible for planning some of the schedules for the day and navigating the public transportation system. (With help from the teachers)
- Collaboration
- We will be working in small groups to create presentations of specific monuments that we will present at the monument.
- We will work with 8th-grade students from the Journeys School to create memorable experiences.
- We will participate in a service learning project with other students from City Kids
Wilderness Project.
To build long-lasting relationships with our peers.
To have fun!
Currently, the most important steps that we need funding are for booking flights and lodging in the next month (January)
This is where your money will go:
Flights ~$6300 (~$787 per person including covering teacher)
Housing ~$2500
Food (Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner)~$1400 (This would be for groceries)
Travel in DC~ $200 (Shuttle to housing and public transportation)
Misc (museums etc.)~ $500 ($1550 per student) (~$12,400 total includes teacher)
My students and I really appreciate that you will be helping them reach their goals and get an experience that not too many Mountain West schools get to do! This appreciation will also reach all of the current students, 7th grade and below, that will eventually get a chance to visit our nation's capital because of this initial trip.
