ICE in Zambia

ICE (The Irish College of English) has sponsored four members of its teaching staff to travel to Chipulukusu, Zambia, from the 18th August - 2nd September 2018. ICE is sending its teachers to a slum area called Chipulukusu, in Ndola, Zambia to help improve literacy, organise an enormous shared school library, and to provide the Zambian teachers with more resources and new teaching methodologies as well as also providing financial literacy classes to widows with small businesses.
The trip is being organised jointly with Michael Nugent , a solicitor based in Ranelagh, who has been visiting Zambia for over ten years. He has been involved in housing and sanitation initiatives, a micro finance scheme to assist widows to start small businesses, and the provision of books and teaching materials and computer labs to schools. In the last two years, he has sent two shipping containers with over 40 tons of school books to Zambia, to form one enormous library which is being shared out among over 20 schools.
This is where ICE comes in. Providing books to schools is not enough, if the schools have never had books before and do not know how to use them. Michael appealed for teachers to accompany him to Zambia in order to educate the local teachers, on how to use books. ICE stepped in with financial sponsorship and four volunteer teachers.
Our preparations for this ambitious trip are well underway. The main jobs that we shall be carrying out are:
-Microfinancing workshops for widows
-Organizing a catalouge system for the library
-To teach various teaching methodologies
-To establish reading schemes and core literacy skills
-To expand the computer labs in Youngnak Christian School and Graceland School
-To sponsor and to build, a series of better toilets and perhaps a clean water supply and one more classroom to serve as a library.
We are passionately trying to raise as much money as we can for this cause. Even the smallest donation will go a very long way in Zambia, and we appeal for your support for the exciting but challenging trip that lies ahead. All money raised will be spent only in Zambia. There are no overheads in Ireland.
