The Ibn Rushd-Goethe Mosque opened its doors in the spring of 2017 to heightened anticipation and interest from the world over -- and with good reason. The concept of an inclusive and progressive Muslim space that acted as a fully functional house of worship was a relatively new one. In fact, the Ibn Rushd-Goethe Moque is Germany’s very first liberal mosque where Muslims of all denominations are welcome to pray, learn, and come in contact with one another in a safe and tolerant environment.
Tolerance was a key principle the Mosque’s founder, German-Turkish lawyer Seyran Ates, had in mind when she first envisioned the space. Our doors are open to all people regardless of their gender, ethnic background, or sexuality. The Ibn Rushd-Goethe Mosque is in strong favour of intercultural and interfaith dialogue, as well as the bridging of communities through understanding and education. We regularly receive diverse groups of people to visit us and have a look at what goes on in a progressive mosque. Many Muslims who hold liberal values feel as though there is no literal or physical space for them within the faith find our Mosque and their lives are forever changed.
Our Mission
The Ibn Rushd-Goethe Mosque is a veritable house of worship for all Muslims to pray side by side without the separation of the sexes or the repression of identities. Our LGBTQ+ brothers and sisters are valued and important members of our community. We would like to see an emergence of Muslims who see no conflict between their faith and Western liberalism. In fact, Seyran Ates and the members of the Mosque are living proof that Muslims can thrive in a European society while practising their faith, and remaining loyal and proud citizens of Germany. The hope is that this idea can spread peacefully throughout the world, providing a much needed alternative to the incorrect mainstream narrative that to be Muslim means to be a regressive thinker.

The Ibn Rushd-Goethe Mosque is run thanks in large part to volunteers who give up their time because they recognize the vital importance of such a place. Unfortunately, we are in need of financial support to keep our Mosque afloat and to continue to educate both Muslims and non-Muslims alike about a more inclusive future for everyone.
