iBikeforAfrica to help Ghana Youth

Tax deductible
School is back in session for many of us but, did you know that in some rural communities, there are no schools?

I’m actually one of those people who is back in school. My name is Kenneth Holley. I’m in my last semester as a graduate student majoring in Management and Systems, concentration Strategy and Leadership at New York University.

During the Spring semester of 2018, I had an opportunity to go on an Education and Trade Mission Trip to Ghana with the National Black MBA Association. This trip focused on cultural, government, and industry exposures.

On my first day in Ghana we attended a presentation at the W.E.B. Du Bois Centre for Pan African Culture to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of W.E.B. Du Bois’ life. We also had a meeting with the Rt. Honorable Aaron Mike Oquaye, Speaker of the Parliament of Ghana, followed by watching the Parliament in session. On another day, we visited companies that are thriving in Accra, such as Niche Cocoa Industry, Jospong subsidiary Subah IT Solutions, and The Octagon--a multi-use commercial property.

I was so moved by my experience that I came back to The States asking myself, “How can I add value to Ghana and how can I support the Ghanaian people?”

After giving it some thought for a few months, it came to me that I would use my passion for cycling to support a cause I believe in. I mean like, biking is good for the soul, it’s good for your health, it’s good for your mind, it's good for the environment but it’s also good for the people. It serves as an economical means of transportation for education and even farming in rural communities.

So, here it is, I came up with an opportunity for all of us to make a difference. After doing some research, I decided to launch a campaign to raise money for the African Bicycle Contribution Foundation (ABCF), a 501(c)(3) charitable organization which provides youth with needed transportation to get to school in rural communities because the students in these communities do not have a school to attend, which limits their future potential.

The funds would be used to support ABCF in funding eco-friendly bamboo bikes so that these students can attend schools in neighboring communities. ABCF website states that “while 80% of Ghana’s children are enrolled in schools, 30.4% of rural male and 28.6% of rural female children were out of school, in 2008.”

I know we can help change the trajectory of these children one bike at a time and on the following dates I ’m going to be cycling 100+ miles on two separate occasions to raise  awareness for #iBikeforAfrica:

- Sunday, September 9th, cycling 120 miles from Brooklyn to Montauk, Long Island in a group ride.
- Saturday, September 22nd, cycling 100 miles from Manhattan to Upstate New York and back to Manhattan.
