I'm a chef, I'm a husband, I love cycling, and I have a mental illness.
In 2015 I turned to Pieta house for help.
I had reached rock bottom and felt I had nowhere to turn. I have no doubt in saying, if it wasn't for the help of the councillors there, I would have taken my own life. I would have become one of the many men in Ireland and the uk, who commit suicide every year.
It's now 2017, and although I'm still on the long road to recovery, the suicidal thoughts no longer plague my day. Don't get me wrong, I'm not cured, and I may well need their services again, but at least I know that due to the amazing work they do, I have someone to turn to when it gets difficult.
So here's my plan and the explanation of the awkward pun in the title.
During the month of November (Movember to all you gentlemen out there) I will be riding my bike for 30 miles a day. That's a grand total of 900 miles! ( Please be kind to me if I've screwed up my maths here ).
Why 900 miles I here you say! Well in the planning stage I had to come up with a big figure, and this sort of added together considering there's 30 days in November, stop reading into things will you!
To make things even more difficult than they need to be, I'll be riding it on a fixie! What's a fixie I hear you say. Well a fixie is slang for a bike that has one gear, and the pedals move all the time, just like those bikes you had as a kid where you could pull skids by pedalling backwards. My god I am really stupid!
Everyday I'll be posting a video to my YouTube channel to show my total mileage (Darren Tapley). And I will give an update and a general sort of blog to tell you how I'm getting on. So come on, give me a bit of support here will ya! Please!
