Supporting Our Loved Ones at the Border

On Monday, December 10th, I joined over 300 clergy, faith leaders, and advocates at the US-Mexico border  to call out the injustices being done against asylum-seekers from Central America and for those who are suffering the injustice of a complex and exhausting immigration system. My heart was filled with the joy of sharing community with diverse leaders from around the country, but also filled with the real fear of what was to take place. Thirty-two colleagues of ours were arrested and international audiences witness the prayers, songs, and interaction of our community in the face of over a dozen Border Patrol and CBP officers. It was the powerful and organized support of The Poor People's Campaign and the American Friends Services Committee that made this all possible. 

Now that the direct action was done and that folks were released... What's next?

A dear colleague of mine reminded me that these actions are important, but are not the panacea that we need for folks who are still suffering from a shortage of resources and utilities at the border. Something must be done to help them. Traveling thousands of miles of freedom would make most forget their pains and sorrows, but something must be done to to help them. This is why I am starting a fundraiser and will be searching for an organization that can use these funds to make an immediate, direct, and powerful impact on folks that need our help. 

For those that are skeptical, please keep this in mind: There is always a way to help. Your politics and worldview may drive you to certain conclusions, but we do not want people to suffer. And our faith traditions and moral conscience always remind us to strive for the well-being of others so long as it is in our means. How we may help the unsheltered here in the United States, our veterans, our sick, and our hungry is one thing. All I'm saying is that the hand of generosity should never discriminate. And helping others is always a way to help yourself by learning about people for who they are rather than being told who they might be. 

This money will not go to a political organization or grassroots campaign for advocacy. It is understandably needed, but the people suffering the injustices need the help more than ever. Once I am able to determine which organization, I will gladly make that public.
