Feminine Hygiene for Homeless Women

Donation protected

It's easy to get angry about the state of our nation. Many of us are wondering what this election will mean for the rights and freedoms of women everywhere.  It's okay to be uncertain, and it's okay to be upset- but we can't stop there.

As I write this, it's Veterans Day. I skimmed through statistics about the alarming homeless rate among veterans, and I was especially disheartened to learn that "women are the fastest growing subset of the homeless-veteran population in America" (J. Kitfield, National Journal, 2011 ).

Women of all demographics may be affected by changes in government and policy - and we must assemble, plan, and make our voices heard - but there are women in our communities who need our help right now. "Nearly 40% of all homeless people in the US are women, and there are 50,000 women on the streets nationwide" (Upadhye, Bustle, 2016 ).

Periods can be a nuisance to any woman, not only physically, but also financially. It's estimated that women spend an average of $120 annually on pads and tampons alone (Morrissey, Jezebel, 2012 ). Obviously, if you're homeless, you're most likely going to spend any money you have on the bare necessities to survive, and sometimes you're not just looking out for yourself: 60% of homeless women have children under 18 (Green Doors ).

With limited access to any feminine care products, homeless women are faced with difficult and unsafe choices: "some use socks, paper towels, plastic bags, toilet paper, towels, cotton balls, or clothing..." (Upadhye, Bustle, 2016 ). Women have also reported leaving their tampons in for days, which can lead to the life-threatening complication of toxic shock syndrome.

Please help me channel our frustrations into something tangible. Together, we can help homeless women in the Greater Cleveland area maintain their dignity and make one less difficult decision per month. Every woman has the right to manage their menstruation in a safe and effective way.

Every dollar raised in this campaign will be used to purchase feminine hygiene products for our local assistance and advocacy organization, Northeast Ohio Coalition for the Homeless

For a $10 donation, I can buy 75 tampons, or 2 menstrual cups (which can last a lifetime!).

Thank you for your time, consideration, and generosity.
