Gucci's Medical Expenses

Donation protected

On Saturday, October 20th, exactly one year since she joined our family, Gucci began experiencing terrible pain causing her to yelp out with any movement. Gucci progressively got worse, not wanting to eat, drink, walk or move because of the pain. Even a light touch would make her cry out. On Monday, 10/22, we brought her to a surgeon, per our vets recommendation. Gucci did not respond positively to steroids or opioid pain killers. Originally, the surgeon believed Gucci had a ruptured disk due to Intervertebral Disk Disease. However, after review of the CT scan with the radiologist, they both agree that the condition of her disks are not severe enough to cause her symptoms and she will not need surgery. The doctor then thought that Gucci may have Meningitis or Granulomatous Meningoencephalitis. Her spinal tap culture came back negative for bacterial or viral Meningitis. So, the assumption is now GME, which is autoimmune. It will have to be managed with steroids and antibiotics unless I can find a holistic recovery.

Gucci was released from the hospital on 10/24. She was able to get up and take a short walk, so, the doctor felt that they wouldn't be able to do anything for her there that we couldn't do at home.
Gucci was sent home with antibiotics, steroids, pain killers and an appetite stimulant. Gucci is getting stronger every day. She is still taking Prednisone, antibiotics and Tramadol for pain. Though, we are weaning her off the pain killer. She is now eating, a lot, because of the steroids. We go back for another follow up visit on 11/7. We are so happy to have Gucci home, but, I am not completely convinced that she was ill due to GME. I am still very worried that she will relapse. I dread seeing her experiencing that pain again. We can hear her groan softly when we pick her up and move her around. I am hoping that she isn't still in pain or that it will get worse.

Anyone who has had a pet that needed surgery or special treatments certainly understands how expensive it is and the burden those costs put on the loving family. There is Care Credit, but, we are unfortunately not eligible. Any contributions will go toward paying all of the lab tests, medications, hospitalization, etc. itemized in the attached invoice.  Donations in excess of what we need will be donated to various rescues.

Gucci is about 8 years old. She is one of the beautiful girls we adopted last year, on October 20, 2017 from Shih Tzu and Furbaby Rescue. Gucci and her little girl Madison have been such gifts to our family, filling the void the loss our furbabies, Mika & Marley, left when they passed away (Shih Tzus we had for 18 and 16 years).
Gucci is sweet, loving, cuddly and funny. She has the most gorgeous, soulful chestnut brown eyes that tell you how much she loves you.

At the time of her surrender to STFBR, Gucci was in bad shape. She was bred several times, was malnourished, had terrible flea bite dermatitis and lost most of her hair. We want to make sure the next ten years or more of her life are the happiest she has ever had.

We would be eternally grateful for any donation you can make, even $5, to help us get out of the financial hole Gucci's illness created.
Again, any excess will be donated back to various rescues.
Thank you so much!
