Stop the Rot

This is Frankie. Two weeks ago she was a happy, healthy five year old Wheaten terrier with a zest for life you wouldn’t believe. A week last Sunday, she suddenly became poorly after coming home from a walk in Sherwood Forest. She  started shaking, her temperature dropped, she had sore patches on her belly and within a few days she had massive kidney failure. Her vets believe she was infected with Alabama Rot. They can’t be 100% sure as diagnosis of Alabama can only be made at post mortem and despite all the odds being against her Frankie is still alive and very much fighting for her life.

Most dogs suspected of having Alabama Rot are dead within 24-48 hours. This is because very little is known about this awful illness and the high mortality rate means vets have very little to go on. They have to treat the multiple symptoms the illness presents as and when they appear. They can only learn more about the disease when dogs like Frankie, respond to treatment and then present more of the complex symptoms associated with the illness. Unfortunately because of the high level of intensive care needed and the frequent administration of a multitude of drugs, blood tests, X-rays and scans, treatment is too expensive for many owners to continue with in the long term.

Frankie was insured. Her £4000 insurance was gone within 48hours. We have also spent another £12,000 so far continuing with Frankie’s treatment. She’s still with us and showing signs of improving but we don’t know if she is going to make a full recovery or not. There are absolutely no guarantees.

We want our vet to be able to carry on treating Frankie because first and foremost we are desperate to save our dog’s life. As long as it’s in her best interest to treat her and not causing her unnecessary suffering we want to give her every chance of survival. But we also want Frankie’s case to help other owners put in this awful position.

We have been so impressed by the vets at Derby’s specialist Pride Veterinary Care Centre and their commitment to do all they can. They share expertise, experience and information with other vets across the country who are all trying to find out more about how they can stop this horrible illness.  They are also helping as much as they can to make Frankie’s treatment affordable for us.

We want to raise funds to keep  Frankie and other dogs like Her alive long enough to help vets find out more about this illness. This will eventually
enable them to provide affordable, effective treatments for our dogs - our ‘best friends’.

We don’t know yet what’s going to happen with our girl, but I’m deterrmined to keep trying to raise funds to help as much as I can to Stop the Rot! Please help us to do this. Any money raised will go towards setting up a fund to help dog owners like us keep their dogs alive for as long as possible and give them a fighting chance. If you can donate that’s amazing, if you can’t we’d appreciate you sending out a prayer for our little girl and all the other dogs and their owners out there who are falling victim to this illness. Thank you for reading and thank you for your support.

I’m really sorry to have to say we lost our little Frankie yesterday - she just didn’t have any more fight left in her. Thank you so much for your support. I’m keeping this fund open for a while and some time soon will hopefully feel like doing some serious fund raising at OTC to help support other dogs and their families who have to battle this horrible illness. RIP my beautiful girl I’m gonna miss you so much

Well Frankie is continuing to fight. She was very weak yesterday when I visited her but she is such a little fighter she hasn’t given up yet. Love and thanks to everyone who is supporting her - hopefully we will see this again one day soon
