Huw's organ music - new recording!

A new recording of organ works by Huw Morgan!

Firehead are thrilled that a major survey of the organ works by our house composer Huw Morgan will be recorded this year by David Pipe, on the organ of Bridlington Priory, North Yorkshire. While several of Huw’s works appear on other CDs, this is the first recording solely devoted to his varied and exciting music. We are inviting our friends to become supporters of this project: please read on for more information as to how you can contribute!

Friends since their student days at the Royal Academy of Music, David and Huw have collaborated on numerous musical projects; in 2012 Huw worked as producer and editor on David’s acclaimed York Minster recording of works by Liszt and Brahms for SFZ Music, and David has appeared as organ accompanist and soloist in many of Huw’s choral concerts. You can read more about David’s career here  – as well as being Director of the Organists’ Training Programme and Cathedral Organist in the Diocese of Leeds (having previously been Assistant Director of Music at York Minster) and Principal Conductor of York Musical Society, he finds time to be a prolific recitalist and champion of new music.

David has commissioned major works from Huw including Invocation & Dance (2012) and Partita Borealis (for the Bergen International Organ Festival in 2014) as well as giving first performances of several others, including Haven in 2014 at the Temple Church in London. You can hear David play Dance here  as part of a live Radio 3 Choral Evensong broadcast from York Minster.

Historic Bridlington Priory sits proudly on the North Yorkshire coast. This impressive building boasts a fine regular organ recital series: the fiery four-manual instrument and clear acoustic are especially well-suited to contemporary music. You can hear the Priory organ in action here  in Daniel Moult’s performance of Messiaen’s Transports de Joie, and the full specification of the organ can be viewed here.

David will record three of Huw’s larger works: Partita Borealis; Invocation & Dance; Triptych (FfanffareLullabyDialogues), as well as several smaller pieces including Haven, Aria and a number of the acclaimed Hymn Preludes. Many of these will be first commercial recordings: in addition, Huw is preparing a new work specially for the project. You can read more about Huw's compositions here

Meridian Records recently celebrated their 40th anniversary and are reknowned for the clarity and precision of their recorded sound. Their catalogue includes many organ recordings featuring contemporary and historic repertoire played by David Sanger, Stephen Farr, Arthur Wills and more. Meridian hope to release the CD in autumn 2018.

Firehead, Huw and David would be delighted if their friends and followers would consider becoming supporters of this project. You can pre-order the CD by donating £12 or, for £25, you can become a “gold” supporter: this entitles you to a copy of the CD, a signed score of the new work composed for the recording, and a digital bonus track of a work not featured on the CD. Please contact us through this campaign if you would like to support this project in any other way, or would like more information.
